This.
I'm too poor for vacations and I rather have some material items than spend a few thousand dollars on vacations. (It would be nice to have a laptop and an up-to-date computer) If I had all those material possessions then that's when it's time to go on vacation.
This.
The wife and I aren't going on a big vacation this year (we've been on several the past few years), but we hope to go back to Europe next year. I'd choose a vacation to a nice destination over more computer stuff any day of the year. You're not going to remember your 2011 laptop model and configuration in 20 years, but you'll probably remember the trip to France or Italy with your wife.
Did you seriously just post that many huge pictures inline?
wow you have now put canada on a place i actually want to visit. that park looks awesome.
I would get a lot more use out of those items than the vacation. I am not a sentimental fool.
I did scale em back you poopshoot, RbSX.
Going to italy, greece, croatia next summer...probably just do a short trip to the rockies for some snowboarding this winter too.

I'm sorry sir, I'm afraid drinking and driving boats is against the law. Please step aside. Trident will be here any moment to escort you away.
1. To the asshat that took photos of Banff, please scale your photos.
2. Trident, of course, you're a dumbass, this has already been firmly established. I mean I'd try to explain to you why life experiences > having a nice TV, but you wouldn't understand.
I was out on the boat for most of August, and lived in New York for June and July.
Actually that would be poop CHUTE, and not nearly enough.
Considering you've been rich and spoiled for what seems all your life, you probably wouldn't understand what it is like not having everything you want at any point in time.
Again, as someone who is direly poor: I'll go for techno items because they serve me a great deal of use. What I'll remember over any vacation when I look back on my life is how miserable I was because I wasn't able to afford so many things that I wanted/needed that could easily have fueled better memories than some stupid vacation.
Actually bro, my parents weren't very well off for most of my childhood and into my late teens, they almost lost their house 3 times in the process.
Personally, I pay for all my vacations with the money that I've earned, and I'll say that a weekend trip > any tech gadget, especially if you have the right company (e.g. your good buddies, girlfriend or wife).
Remember, not all trips need to be expensive, hell, camping is damned cheap. You don't need to go a great distance to have a good time.
Studies show that you are wrong. Rich or poor, people who took vacations are measurably happier at the end of their life than those who didn't. Matierial possessions simply don't bring much happiness. You get a new techno item and are happy for a very short period then it fades right back to where you were before (miserable in your case). Vacation happiness never fades.Again, as someone who is direly poor: I'll go for techno items because they serve me a great deal of use. Yeah, as a dirt poor college kid that might be true, but once you're out and making money, things change. My one regret is that I didn't travel all over the world when I graduated from college, was single, and rolling in money without any real responsibilities. I'm making up for that lost time now.

And as said above, vacations are only expensive if you make them expensive. Turn off the furnace/AC, buy ultra cheap camping foods, and you could SAVE money by going on vacation. Why not have both: techno items and a cheap vacation?
my first trip out of the country was when i was 23, and i wish i had started earlier. granted it would have been harder since i was making much less money, but i still could have swung it.
i went to cancun this past january and one of my friends who went with me is like 35 and he had never traveled out of the country (and him being deployed to iraq doesnt count).
he mentioned quite a few times that after experiencing it he really wishes that he started doing that much earlier in life. he's now going back to aruba with us next year when we go with a group of people.
