This.

I'm too poor for vacations and I rather have some material items than spend a few thousand dollars on vacations. (It would be nice to have a laptop and an up-to-date computer) If I had all those material possessions then that's when it's time to go on vacation.

Believe me, if I had the time I'd definitely go on a vacation. Unfortunately, I haven't been with this company very long so I don't have much vacation time. Also, my wife is self employed and she finds it hard to take time off.

Maybe next year we'll go to Switzerland and visit some friends we have there.

This.

The wife and I aren't going on a big vacation this year (we've been on several the past few years), but we hope to go back to Europe next year. I'd choose a vacation to a nice destination over more computer stuff any day of the year. You're not going to remember your 2011 laptop model and configuration in 20 years, but you'll probably remember the trip to France or Italy with your wife.

yup i agree 100%. would much rather go on an exotic vacation than buy a new PC or some toy.

granted, i already have most of the toys i want so that isn't much of an issue for us lol. but we'd still rather cheap it up at home to take a 1 week vacation somewhere and splurge that entire weekend. that is what we're doing on our next 2 trips.

EDIT:

now that I think about it too, most of our vacations cost more than a couple PC's or Laptops, not just 1. so yea, definitely would rather go on vacation.

Chincoteague Island, VA.

Pretty cool small town that has a lot of aquatic and land wildlife still alive with it. Lots of seafood. Not so big on nightlife. Very bike-accessible, can bike pretty much anywhere you want including to the beach.
Wild horses, deer, red ear turtles, marshes, cranes and swans, blue crabs, sandpipers, you get the idea.

Went to Niagra Falls, Toronto, Nagasaki, Tokyo/Yokohama, Kyoto, Oahu, Hamptons, LBI NJ

going to New Orleans in the fall :-D

vivi those pics are awesome btw.

I'd much rather spend my money on going places than material items. i'll "settle" with my 720p samsung and old C2D machine if it means i get to go somewhere cool for a few weeks.

I would get a lot more use out of those items than the vacation. I am not a sentimental fool.

1. To the asshat that took photos of Banff, please scale your photos.

2. Trident, of course, you're a dumbass, this has already been firmly established. I mean I'd try to explain to you why life experiences > having a nice TV, but you wouldn't understand.

I was out on the boat for most of August, and lived in New York for June and July.

Sat on my back deck for a bit. Haven't been on vacation since going to Mexico in 2006, but damn I'd love to. Can't afford it though.

I'm sorry sir, I'm afraid drinking and driving boats is against the law. Please step aside. Trident will be here any moment to escort you away.

:(

Fortunately, it's not illegal where I'm from, and it's a bud, it hardly counts as a beer. The stuff is awful, but unfortunately the only thing my uncle had.

Considering you've been rich and spoiled for what seems all your life, you probably wouldn't understand what it is like not having everything you want at any point in time.

Again, as someone who is direly poor: I'll go for techno items because they serve me a great deal of use. What I'll remember over any vacation when I look back on my life is how miserable I was because I wasn't able to afford so many things that I wanted/needed that could easily have fueled better memories than some stupid vacation.

Actually bro, my parents weren't very well off for most of my childhood and into my late teens, they almost lost their house 3 times in the process. My dad had his last car for 15 years because he couldn't replace it, likewise with my mother.

Personally, I pay for all my vacations with the money that I've earned, and I'll say that a weekend trip > any tech gadget, especially if you have the right company (e.g. your good buddies, girlfriend or wife).

Remember, not all trips need to be expensive, hell, camping is damned cheap. You don't need to go a great distance to have a good time.

Don't feed the troll ...

not sure what trident's prerogative is, but he's always looking to do the opposite of the norm...to fluster everyone.

Studies show that you are wrong. Rich or poor, people who took vacations are measurably happier at the end of their life than those who didn't. Matierial possessions simply don't bring much happiness. You get a new techno item and are happy for a very short period then it fades right back to where you were before (miserable in your case). Vacation happiness never fades.

And as said above, vacations are only expensive if you make them expensive. Turn off the furnace/AC, buy ultra cheap camping foods, and you could SAVE money by going on vacation. Why not have both: techno items and a cheap vacation?

Yeah, as a dirt poor college kid that might be true, but once you're out and making money, things change. My one regret is that I didn't travel all over the world when I graduated from college, was single, and rolling in money without any real responsibilities. I'm making up for that lost time now.

Trident just prefers material things moreso than reality interactions. Not that it's wrong or anything, but I suppose that's his life. Let him indulge in his stuff.

my first trip out of the country was when i was 23, and i wish i had started earlier. granted it would have been harder since i was making much less money, but i still could have swung it.

i went to cancun this past january and one of my friends who went with me is like 35 and he had never traveled out of the country (and him being deployed to iraq doesnt count).

he mentioned quite a few times that after experiencing it he really wishes that he started doing that much earlier in life. he's now going back to aruba with us next year when we go with a group of people.

Except that I hate camping and my apartment doesn't give me discounts because I am gone for a few days (Flat rate for everything)... I don't have AC and I already live on cheap food. woo...

first time out of the states for me was when I went to Europe with just my GF when I was 18 ...paid for it myself as well, 3 weeks...was pretty awesome.
