Where did these fonts come from? "Over 500 Fonts" error ...

My grandfather's Compaq machine spontaneously (so he says) starting giving the standard Windows error about "Over 500 Fonts". It's not crippling by any means - all it takes is a click on the "OK" button and it's gone - but since he's Technologically Challenged (TM) it's a Major Catostrophic Failure and requires my Immediate Attention.

I figure the easiest method to solve this is to just delete a hundred or so unused fonts. But my question is - if he hasn't installed any more software, where would these fonts come from?

Standard windows error? I believe I have somthing to the effect of 700 fonts installed and don't see no damned error. BTW, spyware.

I bet it read something like:

"Windows 95 has detected that you have 500 or more fonts. (includes non-TrueType) Please upgrade your Windows to Windows XP Professional."

I bet it read something like:

"Windows 95 has detected that you have 500 or more fonts. (includes non-TrueType) Please upgrade your Windows to Windows XP Professional."

Or:

"RPC Failure. You system will self destruct if you don't upgrade to XP within 60 seconds. Thank you for choosing Mircosoft."
