Where did the thug/gang style of dress come from?

I can understand wearing loose baggy clothes because they are comfortable, and I gess would be beneficial in concealing weapons, but some of these guys take it to the extreme.

What's with the t-shirts that go gown past the knees?

Where did the wearing pants around your ass come from?

I wear my pants low because I like it riding on my hips and not on my waist like most people. When you pull them so much lower, it restricts your movement. This would be bad from the point of view that if someone's coming at you, you likely won't get very far cause you can't move that fast.

I don't know, but I'm about sick of seeing them with the baggy drawers and white t-shirts down to their ankles.

One of the schools here banned the white shirts and dude rags because they symbolize gang involvement. There was an unbelievable uproar and almost sparked a riot.

I cannot wait to move out west (not too far west, maybe Colorado). I'm so sick of the gangster attitude destroying our culture.

Best thing to do is stop worrying about other people's choices in clothing.

Ever seen today's westerns fashions? I've long since given up wondering why these pot bellied out of shape dudes want to cram themselves into tight jeans and wear belts festooned with fake-silver conchos and exotic (expensive) leather boots. It just looks so uncomfortable. In the end I don't see a huge difference between the "thuggish" guy with his chains and FILA apparel and the "Weekend Cowboy" with his 200$ hat, bright yellow shirt with WRANGLER written down both sleeves, alligator skin boots, and skin-tight jeans. Both styles are equally illogical and equally defended by their proponents.

See? We all have gripes. :p

I don't know why people dress like that. They instantly portray themselves as ****** idiots when they do so. But hey...it's probably the truth. They mostly are ****** idiots.

I think that black people popularize the "gangster look", and other people emulate the way they dress. They got the look most likely from rap videos. Rappers got the look from people they pay to keep them well dressed.

It originated from people wanting to look like their hero's in prison. They don't cater to your size in prison, more of a one size (large) fits all.

It comes from the fact that these little kids who want to act like grown ups yet their body is too small to fit into adult size clothes.

It came from prison, where inmates were issued big, baggy, one-size-fits-all clothing. Prison culture became gang/rap culture, and somehow this disgusting ghetto crap became mainstream. Now you see pathetic white-boy wannabes at the mall wearing it, along with your usual idiotic gangsta rap thugz who are proud to look and act like prison scum and continue such proud and degrading traditions as their adoption of the word "n*gga", long abandoned by the white community and kept alive now only by African-Americans themselves. Just one more reason why rap and its corresponding "culture" suck, and are bad for the country, its youth, and whatever other culture we might have had here.

If the white man won't keep you down anymore, then just you've gotta keep yourself down, I guess.

..jail. go spend some time there and you'll understand. the submissive "Punks" walk around the genpop yard holding up their pants to indicate their looking for protection and are willing to "service" to get it. Funny as hell to see the wana be's walking around like this. They have no idea what message their advertising..

I know, I'm resurrecting a day-old thread, but I just love your post. It's not the 'majority whites keeping them down', it's them keeping themselves in the dirt because they want to act like idiots.

Maybe there are these people in Colorado too, but not nearly as many as Cincinnati. Cincinanti is almost 50% minorities within the city limits.

Close... their pants sag for a reason, they aren't aloud to have draw strings or belts. And yes they have mutliple sizes, but why wear a tight shirt when you are issued a size of choice.

Why is this mainstream? Who knows...
