it's the day that stores come out of the "red" and into the "black"

has nothing to do with the stock market crash

It's the first time the stores are in the black since the start of the season I think.

Black Friday (also called Blitz Day), the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Many consider it the "official" beginning to the Christmas shopping season. The "black" in the name comes from the standard accounting practice of using red ink to denote negative values (i.e., losses) and black ink to denote positive values (profits). ..

The Xmas sales were expected to pull the retailers from red ink ledgeer side (loss) to the black ink ledger side (profits).

The day after Turkey was the start of the season.

Because losers stand up all night at stores like Best Buy or CompUSA to score deals that they are originally too poor to afford.

Actually, it means that's when the stores start making profit for the holiday season.

I left the house once at 0600 to get a 160gig WD at BB once.

When I got there they were all gone :(

this will be my 1st year working this day at a big retailer, i asked another co-worker how crazy it got

and he said when he worked at walmart he saw a grown lady rip a bike from the hands of a kid that couldn't have been more than 10 years old, she ran his legs over with it while running away with it, leaving the kid crying in the isle.

So when did people start using the term "Black Friday"? 5 years ago? I swear it's fairly recent. I'm asking about the general public, not accountants or whatever.
