I'd like to get the cd version, preferably new, because the Trent Reznor music tracks are not present in the digital download form of the game. I think they can be put on there with enuff dickin' around, but I'm not really interested in going that route, and I also prefer the physical copy as I guess I'm an old holdout as far as not wanting to get my games via digital download. I have a pretty good collection of games going back 15+ years, ALL on cd/physical copy. Digital download is cool, just not my thing.

i see. do u want it NEW for like a collectors item or just any old copy? because you can get it used like people say. i try to collect games with redbook CD audio too. but i also download cd images of the harder to find or old obscure games. i have a quake CD the music is not exactly one of the deepest soundtracks, its more of ambient background stuff, but i wanted to hear what it was like at least once.

I would prefer a NEW copy if possible, but at this point they appear to be few and far between with a really high price attached. A used copy in very good condition would probably do the trick, but I'm a little hesitant because a lot of the ones on Ebay and Amazon give slightly confusing descriptions of what actual "version" of the Quake disk they have. What I mean is some will have shareware version in the description, or digipak, as well as jewel case version, etc.. I wasn't aware that there were so many variants of the Quake disk. Didn't the shareware version offer the first level of the game, but then you could register it and get a code in order to unlock the entire game which was actually on the shareware disk? Do I remember that correctly? What do I need to look for to make sure I get the full retail version of the game? Very few actually say "Full retail version" in the description.

i think those shareware discs were sold by retailers like compusa or bestbuy etc because the majority of people in the day had either slow 28.8 dialup or no internet period. so the store sold the discs as a convenience for like 5 bucks or something. the disc actually included full versions of many id games, doom ,wolf3d, quake etc in an encrypted file. you would call an 800 number to unlock them. slim chance of that system still functioning. i think there is a keygen out there for it though. but i highly doubt it would have the trent reznor soundtrack for quake.

i can tell you what my legit version looks like and you could look for that one. its in like a custom cardboard booklet with plastic disc holder and paper manual inserted inside. disc, front, back

SonicIce--

Thanks for the good info and the pics of the disk and sleeve. That should help me a lot in weeding through the ones listed so that I get the full version and not the shareware. Would be curious to see what that 1-800 unlock number would yield all these years later. Maybe Carmack himself would answer the phone??
