THe Chilean miners each got $10000. i thought that was chump change till i noticed the avg person in Chilli makes $400/yr!

So at $10k, these miners can retire.

I dont want to live n a 3rd world country. obviously, i cant live 20+ yrs in a 1st world country w/just $100k total.

Name some places to live for 20+ yrs on $100k.

Of course you can live in the USA with no money at all. Just make sure the government doesn't find out about your $100k and you'll get free housing, free healthcare, and free food.

Look in the thread about the $207 mortgage payment. I linked to a 2600 square foot house in great shape, nice neighborhood, decent school system, cost of house is under $38,000. Let's assume you manage to purchase it for about $35. Taxes over 20 years (NY) will probably be around $20k on that house. That leaves you with 45k; 2k per year. $40 per week.

Nope, can't do it in the US.

You don't want to live like the people making $400/year. You will be bored to tears after a few months, if you can make it that long. If you want to "try" something like that, then try to get 3% interest on your 100k and see if you could live on $3k/year. Where? Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Central & South America, Africa.

Edit: The visa and travel expenses will eat into your money quite a bit.

My friend just came from a week in Chile. He's also been in Peru, and he said Chile was quite developed and felt fairly modern... where as Peru felt like a 3rd world country. Sounds like one could live quite well in Chile from this country if they learn spanish.

You can live many places for the rest of your life on that amount of money, you just can't live like you would expect to live here.

Maybe if you make some interest and take a loan out on your house after 10-15 years.

OMG! I realized that half of the ATOTers are keeping it a secret from the OP!

Where can you live for 20 years for under 100k? Your mommy and daddy's basement. :p

political stability in a lot of those places might be suspect though, government/property/capital rights might change within your lifetime

West Virgina if you're willing to put some work into feeding yourself.
