Where can I learn about the CAN interface?

I recently got a co-op at a facility dealing with valve, fan, and pump controllers. They use the CAN interface. One of my next tasks is to do some stress testing to see why some controllers were kicking back to 'default' status and not responding to commands. I have no idea how any of the stuff works since its all new to me. I've been going through the CAN stress test manual, except it seems to assume some general knowledge of the CAN interface. I've googled a bunch of different terms, but I can't find any reference pages, more just product and spec pages. Any ideas?

Somehow I've still not been able to find anything? Maybe it'd help if I knew what CAN stood for. Anyone at least know that?
