I bought a TT BT from an individual and he can not recall if he had the washers....He lapped the HSF so it is nice and shiny...😀

any idea where i could pick up these non metallic small washers to use on a mobo?

looked at HD to no avail, I have none lying around...

any ideas would be great

thanks

Personally I rarely use them. The intent in most circumstances is to provide a ground. That?s why they have the silver ring around the hole.

I agree but around the socket the holes have no silver ring so I need a nonconductive washer

The mainboard does NOT ground through it's mounting screws.
It grounds through the ATX connections.

Your local comp shop or ACE Hardware will have those washers. The motherboard is not supposed to be screwed down tight. The washers allow expansion and contraction during thermal cycling. This is a detail, some builders don't use the washers. I do.
If your in the middle of BF, Egypt. I'll send you some if you PM me an address.

Most good hardware stores and large home centers (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) will carry fiber washers. You want the ones to fit 6-32 screws (or 1/8" hole). And you can probably get them from www.cyberguys.com or McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) if you can't find them locally. Personally I'd stop by a local Mom & Pop computer store. They usually have a parts can full of them. If you haven't already cultivated a relationship there, then think of something else you could buy while you're there, you'd probably get the washers for free (or very cheaply).

And yes, mobos DO ground thru the mounting screws as well as thru the ATX connector. Most (uaually all) of the proper mounting holes are thru-plated and connected to the ground plane of the mobo. Anyone with a meter can prove that to themselves. That's why back in the old days there were at least a few brass standoffs along with all the nylon ones. You can use fiber washers top and bottom at every mounting point and still not be able to prevent grounding thru the chassis too unless you go out and buy nylon screws (don't bother!). DO NOT put the washers on the bottom of regular mounting points. If it's just heatsink mounting points it doesn't matter so you can use them top and bottom if appropriate. The washers go on top under the screw heads at the regular mobo-to-case mounting points.
. I use the fiber washers myself to help prevent over-tightening and to relieve stresses from thermal cycling. My current case has snap-on mobo mounts at most points so I use the washers at just one or two points.

Delbert is going to send me some..thanks😀

The reason I need them is for mounting the BT directly over the socket(not mobo to case)...I will post a pick from Mad Mike at XS..got the HSF from him... great guy

XS seems to be down🙁

see pic three want a washer here to avoid a short or other bad things

He has suggested lightly sanding the yellow screw holes so they are more flush to mount the BT...but the standoff would be directly against the mobo(the hole where the retention bracket screws in...no need for washer since bracket is plastic)

He just could not recall if he had sent some..and I looked through everything to no avail

Checked home depot yesterday and could not find them ...but probably missed them

I will look at Ace for fiber washer 1/8inch as Zepper suggested

EDIT: finally found Cyberguys but they wanted $8.40 plus $4 priority or $8 UPS to ship...give me a break..$12-15....no way..I rather pay someone here $15 than them..highway robbery

Once again, I sit corrected. I should have said, it's not necessary for the mainboard to be grounded by the mounting screws. I have booted three ATX boards out of the case while they set on the anti-static bag and the board mounting holes weren't grounded. So I guessed it was not requiored.

AT boards I have no experiance with.

Yes, I did test a junk ATX board I have for resistance between the ATX ground pins and the mounting hole washers. Reading, 0 ohms. 😀

Thank you once again Zepper, for to remain humble, is to remain teachable 😉

Shinyness isn't always important 😉 Ask him if he used a polish when he sanded it [Not lapped. Lapping is entirely different], if he did, ask him if he used an acetone to clean the polish off afterwards--if he didn't, use one when you get it.

As an example with diamond polish, if there are micron-sized bits of diamond inside the block, you run into issues with AS5 not filling in those holes, and diamond inhibiting thermal contact.

Extremely shiny and smooth--but TERRIBLE contact between the Heatsink and IHS.

Trust me, it's a problem 😉 Been there, done that.
