Where can I get some Goof Off (or any xylene based cleaner) and isopropyl alcohol? I just ordered an E8400 and come Acticsilver Ceramique with it. I need to clean the thermal grease/pad off the heat sink and heard these will do the job but have no idea where to get it.

I found it on Amazon but I'd rather go to a BM store and not pays shipping.

target/walmart/homedepot/lowes for goof off type stuff
isopropyl is found at any drugstore or target/walmart. near the hydrogen peroxide and other stuff. ~99cents. 70-90% is what those places sell, its good eonugh for cleaning stuff like heatsinks. frys sells up to 99% ithink

I use Goo Gone for the really tough stuff (any hardware/building supply place), followed by alcohol. I use 99% isopropyl that I get at a "health nut" type pharmacy. Some beauty supply stores have it too. the 70% That you find in most drugstores is 30% water. Whether or not it is distilled water or not, I don't know, so I stick with the 99%.

I wouldn't use Goo Gone, as it's oil based. That'd be like using gasoline to clean your HSF/CPU!

My favorite is electrical contact cleaner. It's non conductive. It melts everything, (including plastic so be careful), then evaporates extremely fast. Followed by 99% isopropyl.

That's fine, the guy said he follows it with alcohol. That's like using WD-40 to get rid of tar splatters on your car - works great but you just have to wash off the WD-40 afterwards.

I use lighter fluid (naphtha - found as Ronsonol, Zippo, store brand fluids) to get off the rubbery tim pads (after scraping most off w/ a plastic tool - the knife you get with McDonald's breakfasts works great) followed by an alcohol rinse. And keep both 90 or higher and 70% isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) around for the other stuff. Coffee filters work good for lint-free wipes.

Thanks letting me know where to get Goof Off. I realized why I didn't find it on the Home Depot website before, it's in-store only and I have to go to that section of the site. Also thanks for the cleaning advices. I might also get a custom cooler for the GT8800 soon, so these advices will be helpful.

Plenty of goof off in OT.

Hexane and naphtha are good cutters. They can leave residue on sensitive surfaces, however. Video head cleaner leaves no residue whatsoever.

Yup, Goo Gone contains petroleum distillates. So what if it is then cleaned with alcohol. AS5 contains ester oil, which is an industrial lubricant. Would you then compare AS5 to 10W30?
