Yes. I am originally from the former USSR. The game Stalker and its name is a reference to a Russian science fiction novel by brothers Strugatsky, which is called "Roadside picnic." In the novel there is "Zone," visited by extraterrestrial life (note nothing to do with Chernobyl). It's full of artifacts and anomalies, and Stalkers are people who go into the Zone illegally. You're right, the book and Russian movie "stalker" must have been the inspiration for GSC.
Do you have any family left that could possibly buy it and ship to you?
