there are cracks out there that can do it, but can't post anything about that here

Use one of the free clones of ICQ, they don't have ads :)
Under Linux with LICQ- no ads, and lots of cool things like secure channels to other users.

Miranda-ICQ is an alternative ICQ client (around 300KB in size) for the Windows platform.

As for obtaining the old ICQ clients such as Mirabilis ICQ99b, you can find it at a website, I'm sorry but I forget the address.:( I found it by doing a search on Google. I searched for something like &quot;ICQ99b download&quot;. Sifted through all the ones and eventually found it. The site is clean, no popups or annoying quirks, and the download is easy to find and transfer.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific than that. :(
