Where can I get lapping supplies online?

I know I can go to an auto supply store and probably find a variety of fine grit sandpaper, but is there a place where I can buy it online and have it delivered at a reasonable price? TIA for any tips.

Thanks. I'll make sure to avoid the course sandpaper and I don't have a power sander anyway. ;)

CaptnKirk: What kind of 3dMark scores is HAL9000 getting?

Go to a hardware store and ask for a sheet of glass around 8x11 inches, (flat surface to work on).
They might have a scap piece out back you could pick up for next to nothing.
You'll need "Wet and Dry" sandpaper in grades 220-1200 depending on how uneven the base is and how fine a finish you want to end up with.

I normally use 400-600 grit to get a nice flat surface.
Wet the glass and paper and it will stay put on the glass without needing to tape it down.

The source for the "Lapping", obviously had some junk parts laying around to do some sarcastic humor with.
Did you go all the way to the end of the article and read about the 'Quiet' mod, or the Thermal compounds?

I'm not set up as a gaming system, so I rarely run synthetic benchmarks, but the score is almost always 7585, +/- 25.
I've got an LCD monitor, and they're not known for frame rate refreshing rates like the CRT's can do.

As for HAL - Dosen't matter except for keeping the mission on task, and keeping all that
yummy steak in the freezers ready for the ships galley.

FPSguy, you are a lazy lazy man

I broke down this weekend and drove around the new neighborhood looking for auto supply stores. An hour or so later I had several grades of wet/dry sandpaper ranging from 400 grit to 1500 grit (I had to go to a few stores to find it in stock and get all the grades I wanted). I would rather have paid $5.00 for shipping and had it all delivered to me though. :) After all that I still need the glass, some Goof Off, and some graphite for another project. I guess next weekend's project will be to find some hardware stores. :) If you count time as money, I think I would have been better off buying an SLK-800 and forgetting about lapping my existing heatsink ...

It looks to me like HAL could easily hit 10,000+. Granted it wouldn't mean a lot with an LCD monitor, but I bet it could still put up some good numbers.

lol, I just thought you were too lazy to go get the stuff and wanted it delivered to your doorstep, hehe.

You were right. Having driven around to get the stuff, going to multiple stores, and still only getting half of what I need, I definitely would rather have it delivered, or even buy an SLK800. Too late now, though. I spent the money for that sandpaper, so by gosh I'm going to shoot for a mirror finish like LED. It better lower my temps and let me operate permanently at 166MHz FSB, too, or I'm really going to think driving around was a mistake.

A quality Heatsink like the Alpha's or Thermalrights with a little bit of Arctic Silver III will most
likely be within a degree C of whatever you can accomplish with lapping.
Nothing critical will happen to the CPU unless you exceed 70C, and until 90C is reached you're not dead.
