I've got a 12x10x32 Liteon CDRW drive, and I've never used a cd-rw (so maybe this is a total n00b question!), but I can't seem to find an 10x CD-RW discs! The highest i've seen (staples, best buy) are 4x re-writeable. What's the deal?

actually if you ask me, it doesn't matter what speed media you have, the problem is the media actually has it's own data embedded on it (includes the rated speed of the media). your software then reads this and limits your burner to what the disc says it will burn.

if I had some older software right now, I'd be able to test that theory on some 'high speed media.' that I have.. my burner only does up to 4x rewrite, but I wanted to give this one a try, to see if what I thought was true. anywho, in order to burn at 4x or higher it appears CDRWs use different laser strengths, cause my burner failed some sort of strength test before it would burn the CDRW @ 4x (the 'minimum speed' for 'high speed media').

anywho, one of these days I'll try burning with some older software that does not read that data, and I bet u anything it'll burn @ 4x or lower without any problem. even if it does have a problem, I'll just have to erase, and wait till I upgrade to a DVD-RW drive (which of course will be able to use this CDRW :) )

anywho, yeah, you can buy fast CDRW media all over the place. My CDRW drive is picky with the stuff it will burn, so until recently I was only able to burn reliably (ie, the media was readable after the burn) at 1x with memorex CDRWs..

those of course are over a year old now (so memorex might have changed since then), but I went and tried a whole bunch of TDKs (2 of which were low speed ones, a 74 minute and 80 minute (!) one, the other was that 'high speed' one). the 2 low speed TDK's worked perfectly at 4x (yay!)..

I gotta stock up on these low speed ones though, before they disappear in favour of high speed media! finally! I can do tons of backing up (I hate wasting a CDR)!
