As some of you may know, I'm in California right now so I wanted to ask: What is a good place to buy a Compact Flash cards? I was at BestBuy yesterday and they had a 256MB CF card for 79.99 and I think that's kinda expensive. Anyone knows some cheaper places?

Thanks in advance :)

In hot deals they have a 5 gig mps player that has a 4 gig compact flash drive priced at 188. A link in the discussion re how to remove the compact flash drive to use in cameras, etc tells one how to remove the compact flash card using step by step directions. I just left a site that had either 4 or 5 gig CF cards for $1500, but they were faster than standard drives. I think a 1 gig drive ran over $500, so a 4 gig for less than $200 is unbelievable. If you cannot remove it following the directions, you might get someone else to do it fairly inexpensively. I don't need it but am about to buy one simply because it is a real steal.

Wow, that price is kind of high. Actually, on Black Friday, Best Buy was selling Sandisk 256MB cards for $39.99 - no rebate involved. I picked up one at that time.

I may be mistaken. I went to Dell and it shows as a 4 gig, so maybe the flash drive is only 3 gig. Sorry for any confusion.

It's a 4 GB, & you can get 4 GB MicroDrives off of ebay for ~$200. Basically it works out to a free MP3 player, but you would need to purchase another microdrive to make the player useable.

Also keep in mind that these are CF Type II, and are not compatible with the vast majority of devices out there.

It's only worthwhile if you:

1) Have a specific need for a 4 GB CF
2) Have a device that supports CF Type II AND is tested OK with the card in the player

For the MP3 player capability I'd rather just buy an ipod.

Thanks Viper. There is a big discussion in hot deals as to whether this player has a 1 gig microdrive plus another 4 gig compact flash drive. One poster sent a link that shows exactly how to remove the compact flash. But, there is so much uncertainty I have decided against it anyway (and my wife won't let me have it). I had not wanted to use it in a device. I wanted to get one of those CF holdres that can be plugged into the USB port to make a cheap USB flash card for data storage. If you have not checked, the prices of 2 gig and larger USB flash drives will knock your socks off. I think one that was 4 gig, maybe 5, in size ran $1500.

Thanks again,

There shouldn't be any confusion, it's very simple:

There are two versions, one has a 1 GB MicroDrive, one has a 4 GB.

If you pull the 4 GB out you'll have a useless player UNLESS you put in another card.

The instructions for removal explicitly say you need to purchase another card (they used a 1 GB for approximate pricing) & that you'd end up with a 1 GB MP3 player & a 4 GB flash card for around $300.
