Pioneer DVD players can play them, and very well I might add 🙂

I mean software svcd player, is there a codec for media player or do i need a separate player altogether?

You can play the movie in Windows Media Player. (Assuming X is your CD-ROM/DVD drive) open X:\MPEGAV\ASEQAV1 or something like that.

I'm not sure if media player will play a SVCD. At least mine (6.4) won't. If you go to the directory urbantechie mentioned you can open those files with power dvd and they will play.

Hm i think any software dvd player will also do vcds

this is what you guys are not understanding, svcds are diff than regular vcds so that is not always the case.
