Going to a shop is horrible advice. Gun stores are just places for owner and his NRA buddies to hang out. They are not there for customer service or advice. Why? Because there is such a low margin on gun sales, they don't care if you buy there or not. Especially if they are the only store in town, you HAVE to buy there.

I've talked to plenty of PRO gun people and even they hate gun stores. Having a license to sell guns is like having a license to be a complete jerk. Some won't even let you work the slide because it'd make the gun "not new." Well no kidding, it's a display gun.

I think your best bet is to go to a shotgun range and talk to the people. Gun owners LOVE to talk about their stuff and will usually offer to let you shoot. I always ask how much I owe them for ammo as a courtesy gesture. Of course they always say "Nothing, don't worry about it." :)

This is not something I'm wanting to use, obviously. Given the region of the city in which I am living, it is a preventative measure. If I have collateral damage to a lamp or a speaker, that's fine. I'd rather have collateral damage compared to the situation of having to aim near blindly with a handgun. I do not intend to carry this as a concealed weapon so I really don't think a glock is suited for what I'm intending to do.

What is the muzzle velocity of an average shotgun vs. that of an average handgun? I'd prefer something that did not have the power to penetrate wall after wall after wall in the event I did have to use it.

A BB gun is nothing. :p Especially if you've got anything else you can compare it to, say getting hit by a ricochet from a M1991A1.

Go to a local shop that has a range. They will explain everything to you, and usually let you try some of the models out.

This is the best way. If possible visit several shops, it can let you get a feel for who is full of BS and who is not.

What is the intended use for the shotgun?

Intended use is apartment defense.

Then may I suggest the tried-and-true glock? Shotguns can cause a lot of colateral damage, and they're time-inefficient with loading, and once loaded they'll only fire a maximum of 2 rounds. The glock is a much more convenient and efficient choice.

And if you have children I suggest also purchasing a locking trigger guard.

Thats a big WTF are you talking about??
I can ring out 6 or 8 rounds from the Remmy as fast as you can out of a Glock. And 6 rounds of 12 gauge is a helluva lot worse then 6 rounds of Glockage ANY day.

6 or 8 rounds as fast from a shotgun?

You dont have the arm speed.

I can run a bill drill at 8-10 feet - 6 shots center mass WITH a draw in the vicinity of 5 seconds.

I could fire off 6-7 shots in a matter of seconds with my Winchester 1200 pump. It holds 7 rounds.

BTW-A shotgun doesn't scatter more than 18-24" at 15 feet.

Edit-You can pick up a new Winchester or Remington pump shotgun for around $250 easily.

BTW-Handguns are much safer to keep loaded for home defense than a shotgun. I'd recommend a nice revolver for personal defense over a shotgun personally.

Don't waste your time arguing with this mental midget. It was proven in another thread that he clearly knows nothing about guns and really has no business discussing them rationally.

BTW, shotgun = excellent home defense. Nothing makes an intruder run faster than the stock of a shotgun getting slammed on a wall. In an apartment, you also need to be concerned with bullets penetrating thin walls, thus mind your pistol shots. A shotgun won't get through apartment walls unless you're firing sabot. :p

yeah sabot would be a bad idea, you would be trying to shoot at the criminal not through him.

On second thought shooting through the criminal isnt such a bad idea, less likey they will sue you afterwards

Dead men don't sue. Sometimes their families do though, which is just fvcked up.

Believe it or not, even though I'm pretty anti-gun, I've got a pretty damn good aim. I'll give you a third eye from 30 ft away.

This is exactly my justification. I posted this in this thread after my original post but before yours, however it seems to have been drowned out between the bragging and flame wars. Sigh.
