Go to a local shop that has a range. They will explain everything to you, and usually let you try some of the models out.

This is the best way. If possible visit several shops, it can let you get a feel for who is full of BS and who is not.
What is the intended use for the shotgun?

You won't have anything left to defend if you use a scattergun in an apartment.

Then may I suggest the tried-and-true glock? Shotguns can cause a lot of colateral damage, and they're time-inefficient with loading, and once loaded they'll only fire a maximum of 2 rounds. The glock is a much more convenient and efficient choice.
And if you have children I suggest also purchasing a locking trigger guard.

Thats a big WTF are you talking about??
I can ring out 6 or 8 rounds from the Remmy as fast as you can out of a Glock. And 6 rounds of 12 gauge is a helluva lot worse then 6 rounds of Glockage ANY day.

Would it be too much to ask for you to keep out of this?
There are several other gun threads that deal with the social/political/moral aspects of firearms ownership. Please use one of them or start your own thread, there is no need to crap in Beer's thread.
