Where can I get an introduction to shotguns?

Then may I suggest the tried-and-true glock? Shotguns can cause a lot of colateral damage, and they're time-inefficient with loading, and once loaded they'll only fire a maximum of 2 rounds. The glock is a much more convenient and efficient choice.

And if you have children I suggest also purchasing a locking trigger guard.

Personally I would look at the Winchester defender w/ the ghost ring sights.


Edit: As a couple other people have pointed out, a pistol might be a better alternative. Just something to consider.

Go to one of the better sport shops in your area. Tell them what you want to accomplish, hunting, trap or what ever. They should tell you a few differnt models and size you up to a gun t see how it feels. After you find a model you like them go browsing for the best price.

Look at the Thunder 5 or FMJ MR. Both 5 shot shotshell revolvers.

Magnum research's BFR revolver comes in .410 shotshell / .45LC as well, but nearly $1000.

I can ring out 6 or 8 rounds from the Remmy as fast as you can out of a Glock. And 6 rounds of 12 gauge is a helluva lot worse then 6 rounds of Glockage ANY day.

I was suggesting it primarily for its convenient size and weight.

The trick with a shotgun is to shorten it so you can bring the muzzle around in confined spaces.

Any name brand scattergun with a short bbl will work well.

A Remington 870 or the Winchester is a great choice, but slap a pistol grip on that baby...

A shotgun will scatter and damage things, however it's a LOT more powerful, the sound of someone chambering a round is often enough to scare away thieves, and it's much more likely that the nervous homeowner will be able to hit the thief with a shotgun than a pistol.
