My nine year old step daughter is a huge fan of the Halo video game series and she also likes to play costumes, and she has been begging me to find her a toy sword replica of the halo covenant elite energy sword.

I've seen lots of these on ebay, amazon etc : http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41mlKlSe7TL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

they are made of stainless steel, though, and look rather sharp and these are meant to be display replicas for adults. I'm looking for a safe-ish toy she can actually play with, something made of foam like nerf, or some kind of lightweight plastic but I've been unable to find one.
One would think there would be factories in china churning out junk plastic knockoff toys with the popularity of this game series but it seems not ?

this plastic replica that was planned was canceled due to liability issues regarding the points : http://unleadedlogic.com/?p=472

so anyone have any ideas so I can make her happy? maybe we can find some styrofoam or "nerf" material of the right size/shape to make something ourselves =/

Here's your chance to shine! Find some high density foam and make her a sword. The fact that you took the time and effort will make you a hero.

Tell her she can buy whichever one she wants when she gets a job.

you could make something out of styrofoam or reinforced paper mache possibly. you could paint it glow in the dark, and it would be AWESOME

This is an excellent idea. Maybe not the entire blade, but glow in the dark with blue(neon?) highlights would be so sweet.

The only problem with building it yourself is that the material would have to be durable.

Edit: Holy crap. I was searching for halo swords and found a real stainless steal halo sword. Fuck yeah.
