Where can I get a bag of Cat5 Patch cables?

TwiceOver

I need a bunch of the small patch cables to connect from my patch panel to the switch. However I can't seem to find these. Any ideas? Maybe better search criteria?

Something like 3-4"?

I wouldn't recommend making patch cords. And I doubt you will find any retailer selling anything less than 1ft. Just purchase the 1ft and bundle the excess.

For reference here is the ANSI/TIA/EIA 568-B.1 General Requirements and Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standards.

568-B.1

No where in there does it put a minimum length requirement on cat5e cabling. But as a general rule of thumb. Never make your own patch cables always purchase them. If that means using 1ft cables then I would.

Shorter cables fail certification tests on some parameter, I don't remember which.
the Lucent tester would pass 2'+ cables OK, but 1' was a no go. Would it work? probably. Would I do it? NO.

You should have posted this a month ago, I could have helped you out :/

There is a dollar store in town that had a giant box full of Cat5e cables varying from 3' to 10', and they were priced at 5 for $1. And they all work flawlessly.

I'm pretty sure they had no idea what they were for, as there was a box of USB cables next to them and the price sign said "COMPUTOR CABLES BIG OR LITTLE 5 / $1"

Oops, I read the OP too fast and thought that was 3 to 4 feet instead of inches. I would have to agree on getting 1 foot cables. Page one of the link I had in the above post had some.

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that 1ft was the minimum recommended, but I also remember seeing pictures of setups like mine with short patches. Having 10ft of extra cable sticking out isn't probably the best way for me to do this... Ohh well, no patch panel then.

The minimum *TOTAL* cable length is three feet. If your cabling goes from someone's desk to a patch panel then 3 inches to a switch, the total cable length will still be > 3'. An individual, 3 inch cable (such as to connect a switch to a router that are on top of eachother), though, may have some power issues, but should still work OK.
