Homemade FTW? I'm a firm believer in DIY. Buy the fish, season it, cut it up into artistic style pieces = Sushi.

There are tons of good places, but you can try Sushi World.

My dad and I have found that the salmon at Costco is fresher than at any place that we had sashimi/sushi at. And no rice as filler, just cut, mix, dip, yum!

There's an all you can eat sushi place that i love near boston called "Minado". They have a location in NYC as well. The price is extremely good considering the quality and the fact that it's 'all you can eat'.

I really like tomoe (the real one, on thompson street, not the terrible knock offs). There's a bit of a line but it's worth it, and affordable - about $50-60 a person if you're all hungry though I've walked out spending 20 bucks. Oni cost us $180 a person but the food was ok yet not spectacular. Nagomi was really good and quite affordable too.. Hmmm.Binny is a great place for groups but the sushi was kinda meh.. Karaoke is really fun though. Nobu, which I've never been too, is a famous joint that's supposed to be great, owned by Robert Deniro.. But it's expensive. Nobu 57 and Next Door Nobu are little secrets if you want to experience nobu but without the wait (Nobu is a celeb hang out so it's always packed).

Some of the replies are very sad. OP wants "the best sushi in NYC" and he gets answers like "sushi world" and "all you can eat."

Nobu is so so.

I like En Japanese Brasserie although they are more of an isakaya than a sushi restaurant. Shimizu is very good too and their owner is an acquantance of mine.

Tataki in Tribeca is good. small place, not very expensive. Probably not the best, but worth noting. actually here is the card if you're interested.

You can make anything at home, from sushi to burgers to french cuisine. But part of the fun of going out is experiencing the atmosphere of an establishment, people watching, and having food prepared by someone who's been doing this for far longer than you. Take burgers for example - mcdonalds sells burgers and you can buy some ground beef and stick it on a grill.. But if you've experienced a Corner Bistro burger or one made from Burger Joint you'll wonder how they transformed a hunk of ground beef into something so mouth wateringly delicious.

You need to go to sushi yasuda. make a reservation to sit at the sushi bar with yasuda himself. it's located midtown east, a few blocks from grand central station.

Tomoe on Thompson St. above Houston. The sushi is fantastic, and their sake is top quality. Not overly expensive either.

Insomnia FTL :(

The best freshest sushi EVER was Tsukasa which closed in the late 80's.
A small, obscurely located dive in Kissena Blvd in Queens- sorry, no Manhattan eatery ever compared.
Purely Japanese owned, no Korean or Taiwanese pretenders.
So sad they're gone.
