i'm looking to contract someone write an app(iphone then perhaps android). something simple at first (using a map of the grounds + GPS to find certain buildings/structures). I imagine it would need some sort of DB which stores the structures along with coordinates.

Then I'd like to have this built upon this later.

Where would be the best place to find someone? rent a coder?

ehhhh, that can actually be a really complex task depending on how it is approached.

Just google freelance programming, that should give you a pretty good list of freelancers.

What are your expectations with regard to cost? You can Google for freelancers as Cogman suggested, but if you're a corp. with certain expectations about delivery and quality, then you'd be better off working with an established outfit that has a track record. Whichever route you go I would think you're looking at $10-20k to get through the prototyping phases.

This.

$10k is about right. Up to $20k if you want something amazing.

I'd offer to do it cheaper, but there are two problems:
1) I don't have the time
2) I'm bound by a non-compete from my former employer

Good luck!

i would volunteer to try to do this for android , but i am not sure i'd have the time right now.

I mean the gps api and google geolocator isn't THAT hard to use and if you had a map of the place and had gps coordinates of those buildings I don't think it'd be super super hard to do.

but yeah uh i'll give it a shot for $10k! hahahah

I can do it but I charge $200/hr.

Go with some online consulting/development firms. Some legitimate ones I've seen go as low as $22/hr.

I sat next to a guy on an airplane who's father ran one of the American gas station companies. Claims the company paid upwards of $200k for their iPhone app that was supposedly done by one guy over a 3 month period.

Sounds cheap to me. Here's what you're not figuring in:

- designers putting together multiple revs of creative comps
- someone producing wireframes of the app concept
- all the meetings to iterate on all this stuff
- a project manager to tie all this together, kick off the whole deal, project intake, etc.
- finally a dev working for several months on hardware and software that had to be purchased by someone
- QA testing and retesting each rev

Sheeeiiitt... $200k is a steal in a lot of situations.

Wow really? Sounds like it's a steal if you were funding an iPhone development start-up but this price is absolutely STUPID for a development contract.

Everything you described should already be in place for an established contractor. They should be able to pull an existing design and framework from their portfolio and the developer spends the 3 months tailoring the design and framework to the customer's needs.

There's not too much creativity and variation you can take for mobile development. 90% of the stuff is already built in APIs.

In the end, I call shens on the $200k iPhone project. Nobody is that stupid to do that... I hope.

On the flipside, my neighbor got a somewhat simple but not super simple iPhone app written by a small team in India for under $2k. And, no, I'm not exaggerating or making it up... and my neighbor is a real person. :)

I'm not sure, however, how thrilled he'd be to find me discussing his financial transactions with a large group of people on AT though, so I'll be a bit vague on the details. But OP, if you want the name of the company, PM me.
