Where can I find a utility that identifies CD-R media recording speed?

The topic says it all.

A friend here at work was given a spindle of Sony CD-R's, but he does not know what their max recording speed is. He used Roxio Easy CD Creator to burn a few CD's yesterday. All of them worked fine in his car CD player, but none worked at all on his home CD player. I am thinking this might happen if Easy CD Creator burned at a higher speed than these CD's were rated to burn at.

Is this plausible?

If so, is there a utility that will identify max burn speed of CD-R's?

Thanks.

Nero will correct if the speed is too high

Oh, and by the way... im sure there are plenty of people out there who will appreciate the German. ;)
Although I usually don't speak German, I know "a bit" anyhow....

CD-Rs are not programmed with a maximum recording speed. If you don't know, or the manufacturer didn't specify a maximum speed, then you will need to use trial and error to find the highest reliable speed.
