Where can I download service packs for Win98 ?

I have a laptop running Win98. While I have a WinSE
disc, it's an OEM version so it can't be used to upgrade
Win98 -> Win98SE (and the delete win.com trick doesn't
work, either).

So...I figured I'd at least install the latest service
pack for Win98 onto my machine. I decided I'd download
it at work, since I have a super fast connection there,
burn it to CD, then bring it home and install it on the
notebook. But I can't seem to navigate to any direct
service pack download at the Microsoft site. It
looks at the operating system on my work computer (NT4)
and just drops me onto the NT4 auto-update pages.

Can someone give me a link to the latest service pack
upgrade for Win98 (not SE)?

Thanks,

Kwad

There are no "service packs" as such, for Win9X OS's, only scattered updates for various files, Internet Explorer, etc.
It's possible to upgrade Win98 with an OEM Win98SE:
While in Win98, copy setup files to a "Win98SE" directory on hard disk. Re-boot from floppy which includes "smartdrv.exe". Delete or rename 2 files: c:\windows\win.com & wininit.exe. Type "a:\smartdrv.exe" & enter. Now navigate to Win98SE directory & type "setup" & enter. (Or "setup /p j" if your bios is set for ACPI). When the "installation directory" portion of setup displays, edit choice from default "C:\000.windows" to "C:\Windows". Previous program & registry settings will be retained.
Use www.updates com to get newer than Win98SE updates.
There are certain files which can only be obtained with a Win98SE install: not obtainable by simply updating Win98-(non SE) from MS.

The link I have given above kind of disproves your assertion that there are no service packs for Win9x. Granted, Win98's Service pack comes in 4 chunks, but nonetheless it is available completely entitled as a "Service Pack" on CDROM.

Win95 has Service Pack 1 available for it as well.

Strictly speaking, there is only 1 item not available for download to make Win98 virtually the same as Win98SE, and that is Internet Connection Sharing.

Quick question about win98 Service Packs: do they contain anything that cannot be downloaded via WindowsUpdate? I understand that the original poster needs something to download and burn on CD, but for those of us who have only ever used WindowsUpdate, is there any benefit in downloading the service pack?
