Where can i download linux?

okey now im wondering which one to download? I mainly want it to screw with grub/lilo and do some other stuff too...i was thinkin about debian? any suggestions?

speaking of which.. which distro do you think is the most user-friendly (specifically installation, I guess - although I might be wrong, since everything else after that it's just KDE / Gnome / whatever GUI you use, and which ever shell you choose to use)?

I'm biased for RedHat.. but that's just me 🙂 A lot of my friends recommend FreeBSD and Mandrake tho.

btw, when i goto linuxiso.com i see mulitple cds for linux under each type i guess:

Mandrake - Cd 1 Install 650MB MD5SUM Buy
Mandrake - Cd 2 Extras 649MB MD5SUM Buy
Mandrake - Cd 3 Supplemental 648MB MD5SUM Buy

do i download all 3, i just want basic linux i guess?

You'll need all 3.

Mandrake is a VERY nice distro to start on but you'll outgrow it fast. It hides too much. I then went to RedHat, and am getting ready to put Debian 3.0r0 on as a replacement, as soon as I find the time.

Debian is not a good starter.

I'm still using mandrake haha 🙂

Oh well, works for me, my server's been left on for 2 months without me touching it... 🙂

i think you only NEED disc 1 & 2 for mandrake. you might even be able to get by with disk 1 only, but i dont think so.

(memory failure) 😱

Whats a linux distribution that fits on one cd? so idealy i can download it now and isntall it tonight, im not really looking to use linux but i want to just get grub installed on my computer.

Gentoo.

Don't try it as a linux newbie.

Download all 3 CDs of Mandrake and postpone your install for a few hours. It's not gona kill you.

Most packages will actually want CD2 tho. I have needed CD3 for a few files, but I assume you could strip the install down.

well, he just wanted GRUB.. which brings up another question.. what the heck do you want to do that for?

eh long story short, i have another "form" of linux, well actauly a program that contains a linux embeded OS, and its having problems, i just want to install linux and screw with grub a little, and from that i will be able to get the other thing im workin on running.

If you want to dl the isos, linuxiso is a good site, however, if you specifically want Mandrake, it would be better it you could dl from a mirror site.
(in case you havent done so already!).
Try this

Cheers!
