My friend needs to install 6.0 on his computer because Charter Cable said that he needed it for his second computer to connect to the internet. (Sounds odd...but..) He currently has 5.0 I think. What ever came with Winblows 98. I need to download IE6.0 for him and I can not find it on the Microsoft site. All I see are updates.

Ah, you should've said so.
But why can't you get the setup, configure it to SAVE downloaded files, then simply take those files to your friend's computer?

I got tired of looking, so I just ran setup for ie6 off a w2k box, and off a a win98 box, and the saved files are in <windows> temporary internet files or somewhere....and I just copied the whole dirs. But I never found where I could download the whole lot WITHOUT installing.

You could've done it my way by now ;)
It doesn't make sense for MS to provide a download for the "whole thing" because that whole thing would be different for everyone. What you need to install depends on what you already have and what you want to install. I'd rather download a small thing than a large thing which I don't need...

But I think you can download the large whole thing. I did it for IE 5.5 on TuCows a while ago..

The thing is - I have WinXP Pro and he has Win98. Not sure if it would give me the same files.

If you have an recent ISP CD lying around, it's probably there. The Earthlink CD in front of me has it. After install, simply unbrand the browser and email client if you wish. Otherwise, here is a link for a full install. I have no idea whether it was branded by the university.

Ok, can you just tell him to connect to the Internet WITHOUT IE 6? There is nothing in IE 6 that could make his Internet work if it doesn't work with IE 5.

I looked on Google and couldn't find your full download for 98... Sorry.

Take that to the bank. It won't. 9x and XP setups are separate.

Sorry

but since I'm such a nice guy, PM me and I'll set you up a FTP of the win98 full ie setup files, cuz I got em.

He shouldn't have any trouble at all connecting through Charter with that box and then updating it to IE 6.

I use Charter as my ISP and everytime I do a format on one of my old PC's and install Windows 98, I have no trouble jumping right onto the internet with older IE versions and updating everything.

Has he even tried to connect with the older IE version?

Exactly! I don't know why his ISP is blatantly lying to him. What kind of BS is it to require a slightly newever version of the browser?! Blah.

He will have no problem using Opera, either, which can be installed from a floppy disk or two.

I think it is BS that he has to upgrade to IE6 before he can connect. He probably got a noob cable installer who just wanted to get the hell out of there on Friday afternoon and will send somebody who knows what they are doing out there Monday to fix it.

The AOL disks that are at Best Buy or Walmart should have IE6 on them shouldn't they?
