You'll need Smartnet or CCO access to download the IOS images. That, or find someone with the latest & greatest and have them burn a CD for ya (worked for me!).

IOS 12.2 is the latest, but you'll need to make sure you have enough flash to store the image on and enough RAM to run the image. IOS gets bigger with each new release on a feature set by feature set basis.

Just so I can be clear on what I think I'm seeing here.....

Err is/was trolling for free IOS for his 2500.
(Nutz is/was too)

WTT0001 has apparently provided the software for free or cheap via PM, even though it is only sold through authorized distributors.

If that's true, then that would be theft, wouldn't it? Possibly a federal offense too, since it occurred over the Internet (and probably crossed state lines)?

That would be a bad thing. Cisco takes that kind of activity pretty seriously.

I'm thinking Anand / The Mods might have a problem with it too.

Let me know if I'm wrong here....

Scott

ScottMac,

First of all, thank you for you comment

Second of all, I am not trolling. I rightfully own a cisco router (bought this off e-bay) and I know that I can get IOS upgrade, but don't know where to go.

Thirdly, I don't understand what you mean by theft if anyone can go to Cisco site and register / download their software.

Fourth, I appreciate people that help out in networking forum. Look at the number of messages I have posted in networking section to help out people that have questions in the forum.

Fifth, the networking forum is best utilized for learning not for flames. :)

Thank you.

Ditto. I have a 2501 and a 2502 I picked up on ebay. I also purchased an IOS upgrade, but needed some of the tech docs. I have access to a CCO account from/at work, but this was for my personal routers at home (and I lost the login info). So...

Just to clear things up so you know what you are getting into. You are not entitled to any IOS upgrade unless you purchased a smartnet maintenance agreement or actually purchased the software upgrade. Installing any IOS other than the version/feature set on the router is illegal without said mainteance or purchase.

For example, I have access to every IOS there is. But this does not mean I can just install any version/feature set I wish on any piece of gear. IOS is licensed to the router itself. Heck - call cisco and give them the serial number. maybe there is maintenance left on it.

Well, first, I didn't flame anyone.

At the very least, the posts presented the appearance of a couple folks swapping Warz (not initially, but later).

The software download feature of CCO requires that you pay money (like a "Software Contract" or "Maintenance Agreement"). There are a few products that Cisco provides free software updates/upgrades (Like Aironet)....2500 software is NOT free, I don't even think it's free when you buy the hardware. Depending on what hardware set your router was bought with, it could have any of dozens of IOS versions (all at different costs...none are free).

Second, Tallgeese gave you the link to find/get IOS for your 2500. It's the place where you'd have to buy it (other than a VAR/distributer/reseller).

Nutz: If your company has a contract, fine. Your company is entitled to whatever software is provided under their existing contract. That's the company. Do YOU have a contract? If not, it's theft, just like any other software. How can it be anything but?

If the company buys the software and gives it to you (like, for training), then that's fine, no foul...I guess. But when you distribute it to anyone else, that's theft.

If the company owns a bunch of 2600s and 3600s and that's what they pay support on, then downloading 2500 software is theft. You are not entitled to anything other than what you have payed for.

I stand by the original post. If I was guessing wrong, then I apologize. If software was sent, it was theft.

EDIT: I apologize for using the word "Troll." It's part of my habits of speech, and I used it without thinking of the negative cannotations associated with the board here. Sorry guys.

Have a nice day.

spidey .. Thanks for the pointer.

I will look it up and give cisco a call :) I believe there is still a maintenance left on the router.

Scottmac, you did the right thing. Thanks.

Sorry for the apperence. I assumed that cisco provided it free (It looks like they don't). At one point (when the library I volunteer at first bought a cisco 1605-r for thier ISDN line) I checked out the cisco site and created a "Guest" account. When Err asked today I went to the website and finally found the spot to download the IOSs. Once it gave me a link to download it I assumed it was downloadable and posted here. I left to go around town and just got back to find a pm from nutz saying the server was giving him an error. I tried it and it does so all the above means nothing.

Sorry about the "apperance of evil" due to assumption,

you're golden then. 800-553-2447 (cisco technical assistance center TAC) can confirm your maintenance status. If you have trouble upgrading then keep posting. moving from 11.1 to 12 is a pretty big jump in flash/ram requirements. I doubt your 2500 has the specs to load a 12.1 image. If anything try upgrading to 11.3, you can check the flash/ram recs on cisco site. 12.x adds a lot of stuff you probably will never need, depending on what you want to do.

cheers!
