Hi I can get two 256mb laptop modules cheap, and I've still got my free copy of win2k pro from Microsoft's sweepstakes last year. I've also got free copy of Linux FreeBSD I'd like to dual boot with. So I don't need the extra cost of their preinstalled memory and OS. Where can I just order a bare laptop. Thanks

I have no idea if this will work, but try giving Dell, or Gateway a call and ask if you can specially select what hardware parts you want and no OS on it...

Dunno tho...

Well I don't know where you can get one w/o memory. You can however just buy a laptop with 64mb of RAM. There are some laptops that have the RAM built into the MB w/free SODIMM slots. My Compaq Armada M700 has 64mb of RAM built in and 2 extra SODIMM slots for a max amount of 576mb of RAM (1x64mb built in + 2x256MB SODIMMs) although I am only using the 64mb of built in RAM and 1 64mb stick of RAM w/one slot still open. I am pretty sure some models of IBM Thinkpads also have built in RAM, but I don't know about any other manufacturers.

I called Dell up and asked about not getting an operating system. They say they wont make one with out it, but i was also talking with a person who should not have been selling them. If you call, ask to speak with a manager about it.
