I guess it would be risky, but wouldn't the autoparts stores closer to Lake Tahoe be more likely to carry them? You could pick them up on the way.
Maybe call autoparts stores on the route that you will be taking to make sure they have em.

There aren't a hell of a lot of auto parts stores (or towns, or anything) between Sacramento and Tahoe. There's Auburn, that's about it. The next town after that is Truckee, and if you make it there without chains, you'll probably make it al lthe way to Reno without chains.

hes going to tahoe, why would he go towards auburn? wouldnt you take 50 all the way up to tahoe?
