Depends. Regular set - anywhere $30-$45
But if you have extra-wide sport tires or a car with a low profile, prepare to shell out for a Spider system. For a bimmer, it's about $300.

I guess it would be risky, but wouldn't the autoparts stores closer to Lake Tahoe be more likely to carry them? You could pick them up on the way.

Maybe call autoparts stores on the route that you will be taking to make sure they have em.

There aren't a hell of a lot of auto parts stores (or towns, or anything) between Sacramento and Tahoe. There's Auburn, that's about it. The next town after that is Truckee, and if you make it there without chains, you'll probably make it al lthe way to Reno without chains.

If you have all-season tires and 4wd/AWD many times you won't need chains.

Well, maybe he's headed the reno way to tahoe? The northern lakeside?

Otherwise, I just went up to South Lake Tahoe last weekend before the storms. Didn't need my chains all the way up to the lake. Don't know about the conditions now though. You do see a lot of shops up there advertising chains from 20-35 bucks but you never know if they don't carry your size. If you're just in a regular passenger car, you'll be fine though. I got mine from a Chevron while still in sacramento for 35 (I think i kinda got ripped off, but I didn't wanna risk the drive up there).
