this zalman 7000a isnt cutting it. Idle temps on my p4 2.6 @ 3.25 ghz are 42 C. After running tmpgenc for 30 mins, it climbs to 56 C. I cant have this. This is with the fan on full speed, tried both arctic silver and shin etsu and the shin-etsu actually keeps it about 1 degree cooler.

EDIT.. using an antec truepower 350 with vcore set to 1.625, it fluctuates from 1.62 to 1.58, mostly at 1.6-1.58. I am going to raise it to 1.65 or 1.675 and see what happens.

no, thats the 947-u which is not a heatpipe. I bought it at the first link given and it should be here in a couple days.

Thanks

its HERE, but not in stock

The heatp[ipes actually hinder perfomance on this cooler. I know it is too late but i missed this till now as it is in the wrong forum. This should be in cases and cooling. But the 947-u performs better.

nearly everything I have read say the opposite. Can you provide some links regarding the cooling differences in the 947 and the sp-94? I know this zalman isnt cutting it.

There's a huge post on exactly (or maybe almost) what you're asking, over in the cases/cooling forum.

I have read no reviews at all saying the SP94/97 hinders performance compared to the others. All that Ive read is how much better it is. And all I hear about here is how much the heatpipes suck and hinder performance, so I think I would rather trust actual tests than some peoples ideas.

point me to it please. I looked over a couple pages and found a couple posts about the sp-97.

Overclockers.com rates the sp-94 top of the line with a 80 mm fan.

i'd be really interested to see what kind of cooling benefit you'd get with that over the zalman 7000a. since i have the zalman, and it's the biggest darn HSF on the planet, i can't imagine anything else being much cooler.

please post temps when you get your new HSF installed!

will do. I'm going to use an 8 cm tornado first to get initial temps, then go down to a normal 80 mm fan, and lastly a 90 mm fan

oh, i also have a huge 120 mm fan I have a bracket for which should help since i can position it directly over the heatsink.

I just dont think a 14 degree celsius variation is normal on a processor between idle and max. I can see 8-10 degrees, but 14?

i have one too. using the same fan, i doubt anything can beat it.

slag, i've got a 7-8 degree variation between idle and max.
47-48 idle and 55 at max. that's with prime95 and/or xvid encoding for several hours.

i think the board you have will make a difference in the temp readings. i've got an a7n8x, and those readings are in the bios.

i actually think my range is pretty large, but not as large as yours obviously. i don't have the greatest airflow in my case, cos i've only got ONE case fan, which is a 120mm at 7volts, so the air is being replaced very slowly in the case. with the side panel off the case, my cpu temp hits a maximum of only 52C

my guess is that you don't have enough old air being pushed out of the case...
what exhaust/intake fans are you using?

intake=four 80 mm fans on the front of the case and 1 on the clear side panel blowing nearly directly on the cpu.

Exhaust=2 fans in the power supply and 1 vantec tornado fan blowing out the back at medium speed(hooked up to a rheobus). It exhausts quite a bit actually.

Also, temps do not change much with the side panel off either. I am in my basement which is about 70-74 degrees Farenheit.

This is a bit of a cross post, but for the curious, my numbers with the SP-94 and P2.6C @ 3.25GHz are:

CPU load temp: 35C; MB temp 30C; ambient 21C
I don't have idle numbers, as the CPU usage is always 100%.
I leave the case open, so case temp is approximately 21C.
The temps were slowly going up until I blew some air through the heatsink. Dust buildup can break performance.

Thermalright SP-94 with provided thermal paste
Panaflo L1 Ultra Quiet 92mm
P2.6C @ 3.25GHz, 1.55 Vcore
ASUS P4P800 Deluxe

If it weren't for my 7200 RPM WD hard drive, my computer would be silent!

check your case temp.. a HOT case surely affects even the best CPU HSF...

56C is pretty low under load. Why do you think you need more cooling? My 2.6C @ 3.09 hits 63-64 w/my Zalman cooler, 1.625v BIOS volts. It's completely stable under load. Also keep in mind that the processor will throttle back automatically if it gets too hot. I've had mine up to 70C on my IS7 without problem.

found it for under $50

my zalman is actually cool to the touch with the case off. COOL, not even warm.
since my temps report in the 50s, i would actually have to get air to drop below ambient to get it cooler at the die.

at this point... don't you think it's better to go for watercooling?

My zalman is cool to the touch on the fins also but all that really proves is that the heat isnt being transferred effectively to the fins. If the sensor is saying its x degrees and the heatsink doesnt feel like it, than heat transferrence is not occuring.

I have had watercooling and it can be a bitch, especially if you attend lan parties. My water cooling setup did not leak, but it was always a constant concern and there is more maintenance with water cooling than with air cooling.
