After watching the movie Last Samurai and taking up Iado class in my college. I am truly falling in love with the Katana. THe problem is that I cannot find anywhere that sells REAL Japanese Katana. I have always been a big fan of Japanese history.

What i mean "real" is that it has to be made in japan using the traditional process, not machined or made in some other country. How much should i expect for a real deal? $5K? Is it legal to carry a real katana on the street? For example taking it to the class for practice etc? Another good use of a Katana is that I can use it as a spiritual guide for my rough years ahead in college. You know..samurais treat their sword as their soul.

I am also looking for a skilled kaishakunin for hire. IF you are one or know anyone, please let me know.

No idea where/if you'll be able to find a real one for sale. I'd imagine that nowadays, they save them for some pretty serious occassions (like giving away at the end of the Kumate in Blood Sport, woo!).

But if you did happen to find one, yeah, expect to pay at least a few thousand.

I'm sorry, but if you need a katana as a spiritual guide for college...there's a reason why your college years will be rough...

*sigh*

my brother got a nice folded steel one for a good price. 1000 for the katana, 600 for the wakazashi. (i know i said 2000, but they were 2200 before we got em discounted... smooth talking... )

edit:

sword and knife shops in the malls will custom order you one from japan. get one of paul chen design, with the folded steel method (folded steel is the real method).

this may be somewhat below where your aiming, though. if you want, get one from i forget what american swordsmith, he makes a real nice twisted cable one that'll run you 5000 dollars. if you want a completely custom one with a folded steel blade done by a master, look for about 15,000 - 20,000 as a minimum price.

The ones you use in class are made of wood

Kind of defeats the purpose of learning how to use the weapon if you chop off your arm or your pee-pee in the process now, isn't it?

You'll probably never use the true katana aside from once or twice in your life. They are more art pieces now than anything

You cant do that more than once or twice.

If you are serious, and ready to pay 5k, go to Japan.

if i go to japan..it will be a pain to ship the sword over and i don't know where all the sword masters lives in Japan. And in Canada it is hard to find a well trained Kaishakunin.

I bet you're a furry too. And an otaku.

It's a MOVIE. It was a damn good one too. If it were a documentary then you could complain.

It was a Quentin Tarantino film not a documentary on Feudal Japan. Not all of us have a "sexual explosion" when we see a katana, so please don't freak out so much over a (here it comes) MOVIE. Thanks. ;)

<edit> Damnits, ThaGrandCow beat me to the witty remark. :( </edit>

How about you spend 10 years with a bokken and EARN your katana. It annoys me that people see these movies and decide that katanas are cool, so they want one. I trained 10 years in a particular style of kenjutsu with a wooden sword. It was at that point that my sensei deemed me worthy of receiving my own daisho. I traveled to Japan with him, met with a master swordsmith, and had my daisho custom made. Those two swords are connected to me through the hard work I put forth to obtain them. You want to go out, spend a few grand to buy some "nice" swords, and call them your spiritual guide. That makes me sick. Do you even know the proper way of wielding a sword? Please, save your money, you do not deserve any type of sword except the mass-produced pieces of crap.

Mush respect for you dtyn. The way of the bushido............

On a side note, I can't remember this one guy who forged Japanese swords but he was so good they display some of his blades in museums all across the world. The cost of A sword made by him cost about 2-3 million yen. That's equivalent to $20,000-$30,000.....the price of a decent car.
