If your looking for a new one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824002090

If you can locate any of the sony trinitrons, made by dell, ibm, etc they are great monitors. I use them for work because of the color depth/true blacks.

You may be able to locate some for free that are being junked because the display is really bright or washed out, maybe even scan lines showing. That is because sony had a batch with faulty eproms that lost the settings after a few years and so the monitor display suffers.
It is an easy fix though. There is a diagnostic port on the back of the monitors that you can connect to any pc. Then just run the software and restore the monitor to like new condition.

It even restores all the color and white balance to brand new , even if the crt has changed due to age.

The trinitrons I use are able to go as high as 1920 x 1440 @ 85Hz

AccurateIT is another place to consider. They have some fairly good deals (the HP P1230 in particular, last I checked anyway) and offer warranties on them, which you wouldn't get with independent sellers on ebay or the like.

Note that you always take some risk when buying a CRT these days though, unless you're getting it somewhere locally. Slight defects seem to be common on these refurbs and may or may not be correctable.

Im gonna be in the market for a new CRT too. Im getting a purple effect in the upper right corner of my p1220.

Id like to try an LCD but I just dont think it stands up to a nice CRT for fast-paced gaming.

That purple effect sounds like a landing problem.
It is correctable with the software that I mentioned.

I'm still using my trusty "Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB" 22" CRT and it was probably the last/best CRT monitor made. I think they had a 19" version too. It used the Aperture Grill technology and I can get 1600x1200 @ 100Hz.

I recently tried and returned a 22" L227WTG LCD because of some back light bleed but other than that, it was pretty sweet. LCD's still do not provide an "exact" CRT gaming experience IMO but they are getting damn close (even for us hardcore CRT users). They do give you plenty of other benefits though so I think that CRT's are really dead at this point. I'm hoping my existing CRT holds up another year or so but I'm planning on switching to LCD at that point.

Just my 2 cents worth ~

That's fantastic. What size of monitor?

21"

I got it for $40 at a local school auction. Got it home and the display was all green.
Then I noticed if I wiggled the cord it would look normal. Found out it was a bad solder joint. Soldered it and it works fine.

I did the white balance adjustment with the windas program and made it good as new.

The review says 75hz at 1920x1440 but it can do 85hz.

The closest lcd that can match it in resolution and color is about $1000

The highest refresh rates are attained by the monitors with a 140khz horizontal frequency, like the 2070SB mentioned earlier and the Sony F520. They do at least 85hz at every setting, including 2048x1536. The P1230 I referred to is a rebadge of the 2070SB.

On a side note, if anyone else here has such a monitor and also has a Crossfire setup, I would be interested to know whether it works at the full 85hz at 2048x1536. There was an incompatibility with this at least up to the X1900 CF, even after they fixed the initial problems with the X800s. I don't know if the 4870 X2 or other current CF setups have this problem or not. These monitors are so uncommon that it's hard to get any information on it.

1600x1200 @ 100hz is buttery smooth....I wish it could do 125hz at that res.

Modelworks- Ill try that program thanks
