Where can I buy a nice, but not too expensive tuxedo?

I want to buy an inexpensive, but nice and stylish tuxedo for prom. I figure I don't want to spend more than $500 on the tux. What are some places that I can shop at? I am already gonna go check out Syms and K&G, but I can't seem to think of anywhere else cheap.

<< Why not rent a tux? >>

I'd rather buy. I'm a concert musician and attend a few formal dinners a year. Renting would just be a waste.

Here's another vote for jos. a banks.

You'll probably want to buy it somewhere not online because it'll need to be tailored to fit well, and it'll be easier to let the place from whence you buy it do the tailoring.

Also of note: the traditional shirt with a tux has a fold down collar. The tip collar that shows the band of the bowtie (i.e. tips, the one everybody else will have) is for a white tie and tails. I suppose it's common enough to get the wrong shirt with your tux that you can more than get away with it, but traditionally, fold-down collar = black bowtie, and IMHO it looks better.

IMHO again clip-on bowties aren't the greatest thing in the world. Get a real bowtie; ask the guy from whence you buy it how to tie it. It's easy. You'll thank me when you get compliments from attractive girls :)

My dad used to do that. Being a pro musician, he needed to have a tux for many of his gigs but couldn't afford it. Said he'd go to a thrift store and find a practically new tux some guy had gained to much weight to wear and buy that.

That's nice. Also try the rental places. They usually sell "used" ones pretty cheap.

It's a good investment. I go a lot of charity functions. After I paid over $200 for a rental the first time, I bought one for ~$600. Paid for itself many times over. :)

edit: don't forget to budget some $ for shoes.

Hey that Hugo Boss one looks pretty nice. I'd get it except I don't want to purchase online. I hope I can find a deal like that around here.
