Where are the rules for this site?

This seems to be getting a little rediculous. I myself haven't been locked, but I'm sure it's frustrating for people, especially new guys, to not get their questions answered, or deals posted because of some rules. Where are the rules anyway? Can we have a new category so it doesn't matter what we post?

To post messages on the AnandTech Forums, you must register as a member. This registration is free of charge. By registering, you agree to abide the following Terms of Membership:

When you register, you must choose a unique user name or "handle" and you must provide a unique, valid email address. Duplicate user names and email addresses are not allowed, so if the name or address you enter is already in use, you will be prompted to choose another one.

To prevent any member from using another's handle, each member's account is password protected with email verification. When you register, a randomly generated password will be sent to the email address you provide. Once you have received your password, you may edit your profile to change it to one of your choice. You may also change the email address in your profile. HOWEVER, if you do, a new, randomly generated password will be sent to that address. Entering an invalid email address will cause your user name to become unusable by anyone, INCLUDING YOURSELF, until the information in your account is manually corrected by an AnandTech moderator or administrator.

AnandTech forums, at its own discretion, may bar registration from any specific email service or ISP. Presently, we do not allow registration using addresses on Got0world.com, Hotmail.com, Nightmail.com, Whitehouse.com.

Then why is posting coupons with deals a big deal?

Post the hottest prices and deals you've found on the net in the AnandTech Hot Deals forum. Please stick to deals you've found, not items you are seeking. This is NOT a shopping service. No dealers and no SPAM (IE: muli-level marketing or pay-to-surf or pay-for-referral schemes) allowed! Please DO NOT POST COUPON NUMBERS or PROMOTIONAL CODES.

Why? It seems as harmless as clipping coupons in the newspaper for food and you tell your neighbor about it.

Maybe we need a Really Hot Deals category.

The problem with coupons (as I've heard explained elsewhere) is that when they're posted in here, they tend to be abused. After a particularly bad incident (I forget what it was) the mods made this a new policy, so they wouldn't open themselves to legal action by a pissed off retailer who looked at their site logs, and found a forum with instructions on ripping them off.

It was all about Staples and people posting coupons that were supposed to be one time use coupons (I remember hearing about someone hacking Staples' coupon database, but didn't follow that too closely). Partially Staples fault for not designing their system right, partially Anandtech's fault for allowing coupons. Staples tracked a bunch of referrs back to these forums and started complaining. Instead of just saying no staples coupons, the rule became no coupons at all.

And Dealer, you can tell your neighbor all about the coupon all you want. You just can't photocopy the coupon for your whole neighborhood, unless you wanna break the rules. Anandtech doesn't wanna break the rules, so we can't give out the coupon codes.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I don't know anything about coupon abuse, but Anandtech is still a forum, not a conspiracy. The forum does not post coupons, people do. If a site (ie Staples) has problems with people using coupons, maybe they shouldn't make them available. It shouldn't be a controlled substance.
Sites use coupons to attract business, even if they are loosing money. They hope you will order other stuff to compinsate the loss.
Displaying a coupon is no different than displaying a sale. They are both discounts.

---

We are working on setting up an FAQ where we can post the rules for our forums. Meanwhile, you are obviously aware of our rules about coupons. Please observe them. If you don't like them, you are welcome to find another forum on which to post.

Thank you,

AnandTech Moderator

1.) Please don't post redundant questions which causes the thread to be even longer and full of garbage, creating a catch-22, especially in Hot Deals. :|

2.) RE-READ THE THREAD! and you will find your answer most of the times. 🙂

3.) Do a search before starting a new thread on something that has been posted 63 times already! 😛

I agree with Dealer in the arguments he is making, but the bottom line is that this is a privately owned site. Anand and Co. don't want to be hassled or waste time with possible legal issues, so coupons aren't allowed. Its his prerogative, its his choice. Leave it alone. Posters are good enough in alerting us when good coupons exist, you just have to look at $lickdeals.net or other sites for them. It may be extra hassle to look at more than one site to complete the deal, but for the hot deals, I think its worth it.

If you have lawyers coming after you are you going to:

a) give in easily and just go with the flow

or

b) spend time, money, and effort fighting the lawyers

I think most people will go with "a" and that is what anandtech did. I would too probably. It doesn't really matter though. The rules are the rules. If you don't like them there are plenty of other deal sites that you can post anything you want.

KBtrade- don't read it if you don't like it.

I understand Anandtech's position. And I do follow the rules. I just wanted an explanation, which I got, thank you. Nuff said.

I agree with KBtrade on all his 3 points. Moreover, this thread really belongs to "forum issues", not "hot deals". It is ok if you unintentionally posted in this forum something that is off-topic; everyone makes mistakes 🙂

Each topic should be posted in the appropriate forum because it just makes searches faster and easier when we need to reference a specific post.

And as KBtrade suggested, it's a good idea to do a search first, because almost everything has already been discussed here. This reply is not addressed to Dealer only, but to all members (and not only in the Hot Deals forum). Have a nice day 😉
