Ok all you veteran hardware gurus. I have an Intel VX chipset from an NEC Ready 9702 that currently has a Pentium 166Mhz running in it.

I'm going to upgrade the system trying the method shown in this website here.

It seems either the K6-2 450 or the K6-3 450 are possibilities. Either chip wil be underclocked (woah, theres a switch) at 6x66=400Mhz. Is a K6-3 worth the probably extra investment to get it over a K6-2 450?

Yes but why bother? Is an entirely new setup not withn the realm of financial possibility? I guess your problem is that you would need a new case.

From what I remember, the K6-3 is quite a bit better than the K6-2. But like zephyrprime said, you might as well buy something newer... Unless of course you are building a firewall or something and don't need the horsepower. Also, since you are underclocking it you might not notice the speed gain of a K6-3

Because I can? Because it will be interesting? Because its cool to use old hardware instead of junking it? Lots of reasons :D:beer:

Ah...sorry, yes, this is the HIGHEST processor that will go in my socket 7 mb (lol...as I'm looking I may be S.O.L w/o an expensive adapter anyway, no dual voltage :( )

Check out this Oldie but goodie. This is based on the first mobo I ever owned. Asus HX chipset with a K6-3+ 450 with 256K L2, .18U CPU. 128 meg of EDO, Voodoo3 PCI, 7200 RPM drive on a Promise controller. It still runs pretty well. My 6 year old uses it.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for (wish my chipset was yours  ) You know, except for the memory itself, this system COULD end up being as fast as my current rig.

Celery 466
370 Chipset (I think)
96MB of RAM (prolly PC66 since old celery's run on 66 right?)
Ultra 33 I/O
A couple of USB ports
Diamond V770 Riva TNT2 32MB (aftermarket, bought to play Descent 3 at full visuals!)
zip drive
on board p.o.s. sound

lol....this is gonna make me cry...boy am I glad I'm building a newer system too.
