Where are the Maxtor SATA Drives?

Hey,

I've read a lot of good reviews of the new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Serial Ata drives, but they are impossible to find! Whats the deal? Is Maxtor not making enough, or are the stores just not stocking them? And how much would it be for like a 120 gig? I'm going to build a computer once I can find one of these, I'm just waiting for a Canterwood motherboard and a 120 Serial ATA drive (and no I don't want the seagate one). Any idea how long I'll have to wait?

Does anyone know?
The sizes of the two drives are quite different though (160GB vs 36GB). But who is the speed champion?

The other has a faster access time. It'll be an unfair comparison.

i too am interested in this. i'm looking to go from a 60GB 5400RPM 2MB drive to a 120GB 7200RPM 8MB drive, but i sure as hell would love to use the SATA standoffs on my mobo if possible. if i cna get my hand on a 100GB+ drive for around $150 with those specs, i'd be damn happy. hopefully the production rate will ramp up before fall

Well, yes, the raptor has an access time of about 5ms and spindle rotation of 10K but have you seen the tach meters and sandra marks of the Plus 9 SATA? They are unbelievable faster than the Cuda V SATA, and I think that very close to the Raptor. What I haven't seen is a face to face comparison between the two. Further more, if the gap between them is small, I'd rather go for the maxtor, because I'd have a RAID array of 160GB or 240GB versus an array of 74GB, which is too small for me :)

I have also read that the cache algorithym for the Raptor is not optimized for desktop use. This might make it less desirable for real world use in home systems.

This thread made me decide to check Pricewatch again. Several venders report availability expected 5/21.

Wished that the Maxtor on this Head-to-Head was the Plus 9 Sata .... but these numbers might indicate that the Plus 9 Sata could be very close to Raptor performance (with the obvious exception of applications that require frequent random disk access).
