Where are the Japanese gamers? Do they play online?

I played a Sins of a Solar Empire game with some Aussies a couple hours ago and they lamented the fact that it's hard to find people to play with since the North Americans and Europeans aren't playing at that time. That led me to wonder--where are the Japanese gamers? It also occurred to me that I have never seen a Japanese-based FPS server. What games are they playing? (Or do they not game and just watch anime?)

I've played Japanese people in SC2, and Koreans in SC.

I've also played with Japanese in MMOs.

Last I heard most Japanese prefer handheld gaming, on Gameboys and cellphones. Many of them dont even have home computers, they prefer a cell phone with advanced capabilities.

When I played FFXI on Pandemonium (UK player, US Server) all of the best players were Japanese.

Their groups were miles superior to any American group i played with despite the language barrier.

Mind you some Americans barely have any grasp of the English (UK) language.

Besides this, I have rarely saw a Japanese player online.

uh, isn't American English and British English basically the same thing? The Brits add a u to some words, but its still the same word. unless you mean slang, then yeah, why would we know wtf you are talking about unless we're exposed to it?

True, but it's very big in Korea. So the question should be, where are the Koreans?

Did they even sell Sins of a Solar Empire in Korea?

they either play Blizzard games or Korean developed games that are more often than not clones of popular PC multiplayer games

They play on closed lans in concentration camps where they are killed if they don't perform to expectations. If they are up to par they are then put on korean media where they become famous for being a pro gamer.

I'm an ALT (Assistant English teacher) over here in Japan and the gaming scene is quite big over here (or at least the impression I get from chatting to students).

However, most tend to play home-grown MMOs and have never heard of the Western ones. Or they play PS3 online stuff. I'll have to find out some of the names of 'em one day...

Not sure about the expat community here. I'm a gamer, but only just got new PC and more into solo games (currently Fallout 3) but maybe will get back to WoW :p . The other people I know tend to play console as well, mostly due to the fact that they're only here a short time (1 year-ish often) so buying/building uber-PC doesn't make sense financially.

And for the whole British English Vs American English... the American English is closer to the original (i.e. older) English (e.g. Pants => Pantaloons whereas we Brits use trousers). Obviously those settlers we sent over didn't like change :D

I think they prefer console games such as ps3, wii...
Handheld games are also very popular in Japan such as NDS, PSP, PSP GO...
I like to play capcom's and koei's games but many of them are solo games.
I was addicted to Sango's series in a period of time and played with my friends.(only allow 2 players with joysticks at the smae time). They were easy games and we played them no-brainer, I thought that's why we liked them.
In addition, Most of Japan's RPG games are turn based and solo type. And I don't like to play them too.
Anyway, I really like FPS games and can't resist them.

I've ran into Japanese players from Japan playing Gears of War 2 on 360 a while ago, and it was a rare experience. They were so polite and nice to each other, I felt a bit out of place to be honest.

I used to play Aces High in the early morning, and there would be the same Japanese guys on like clockwork every day. I used to run missions with em, and it'd be nothing but Japanese on mission vox. Gotta tell you, it gave me some chills to fly A6Ms with those dudes.
