X-Play is suppose to have a review today at 5pm PST. :)

As much as I'd like to "beta-release" test AOC - I think I'll wait a month or so until they get the kinks worked out. :)

edit:

they gave it 4 out 5 - the review was mainly from the "starter" area [under level 20?] - and they were excited about mounts, battles, etc. They did say the MMO has the usual bugs that most new MMO's have... so..as I said before - I'll wait a few months until they get the kinks worked out.

i'm not sure i want to buy it or not. i played the beta and was completely unimpressed, but then i didn't get very far in the beta, nor could i play past the "single player" part.

Can you view patch notes anywhere? I looked all over the AoC official site and community site and saw nothing. Seems you also cannot access their forums without purchasing the game.

This is the sad part of FunCom's business practices. Get the game and you can get access to their forums and their patch notes. It sucks but thats how they do business unfortunately. They been patching about every day (except Saturday & Sunday) so there are a lot of patch notes. They really should change this so people can at least view the forums but its their lost if potential customers turn away in fustration and disgust for the lack of info.

Like any game you'll either like it or hate it. Level 1-20 is only a small part of the game. But like all MMOs there is the grind of leveling. There are some things new and/or different about AoC and there are some things that are the same in all MMOs. Some feats and skills need fixing. Best thing I could reccomend is that you try it and find out for yourself. You may want to hold off though till they get some more things fixed. Just depends how demanding you are of a game and what your expectations are.

Edit: This reply is for Pontifex. I meant to hit quote but flubbed that up. :D

There are two reviews listed at metacritic.com, but responsible reviewers will be waiting awhile.

It seems to me it is fair to say that AoC is something like a hybrid of GW and WoW. It has big zones, like WoW, but they are instanced and essentially rail-rides like GW. Because it is not truly open, but open enough not to force you into a party to get through quests, the social aspect is lacking. It's like playing GW solo. The structure of the player feat trees is taken from WoW, but the way in which you have to implement feats and combos in sympathetic chains/orders is very GW.

The game has lots of little things that need fixing at this point-- bugs like inventory problems, bugged NPC spawns, graphical clipping of armor models into PC models, skills not working-- that sort of thing. I'm not talking 'balance' BS.

It also has some big-boy hardware demands, which have got the forums all upset because MY 7600GS SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN THIS GAME FUNCOM SUX!1!11. Funcom was smart to lock their forums. The forums are abysmal, a huge moanfest about everything, worse than any game forum I've ever seen. It's pretty clear that plenty of pre-teens have somehow gotten their hands on a copy. (All the whining from people who can't run it and who claim will cancel bodes well for the future though; it's like watching natural selection in action.)

If you have discriminating taste in frames per second, don't try to play Conan unless you have a C2D and an 8800GT 512 equivalent or better.

All that said, the game is fun so far; the quests and the combat rocks. Whether or not AoC has the quantity and quality of content that it should past lvl 40, like other people say it doesn't, I've yet to experience.

And finally: It is NOT truly an MMO, and it will not be a WoW killer for that reason alone.

At best it will be a niche game for PC, but it will do much better as an Xbox title.
