I'm planning on buying parts for my next system soon and I was looking over prices of video cards. I was thinking the 9700 Pro since it was $300 but now I odn't see it at many places. Newegg doesn't seem to have any other th an the retail one and Best Buy doesn't either. Is ATI's next card going to come out soon and push the 9800 Pro prices down? I'd appreciate any comments because I have a $200, yes a $200 gift card for Best Buy and I'm hoping to spend $300 before the gift card. BTW, it wasn't given as a gift, but I bought it with points from hotel stays...

This card was discontinued for production AFAIK and was told. Which is why the supply has a drout. No sense in producing a former flagship when your new flagship is in position.

9700 Pro has reached end of life, and I don't believe its being produced any longer...

I posted something here in regards to the same thing a week or two ago...

Thats what I was thinking as well but I can spend upto $300 on this video card unless I don't buy a new case and PSU, then I can go upto $400 but I do n't like pruchasing the best card at the time. What $300 card should I get then? The 9800 non pro isn't down to $300 yet....

The cheapest 9800 Non Pro right now is $388 shipped at newegg.com.... How much longer till it comes down because while I can get the 9600 Pro, it won't perform anything like the 9800 non pro or the 9700 Pro especially in things like Doom 3.

The gift card, no its not an american express one, its specifically for Best Buy. I got it through the Marriot Rewards.

Also, the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Retail is also at newegg, but overall I think they're just leaving. I thi nk I'll wait a week or two and see what happens. Worst comes to worst, I'll build my computer and use an old Radeon VE to hold me out until the price is right.

If you have a local Bestbuy, you might check and see if they have the 9700 Pro in stock, even though the website doesn't list it any longer...

well i was only mentioning abut the gift cards because many best buy gift cards are just american express cards that can be used anywhere (as are barnes and noble cards IIRC)

You may want to check out CircuitCity, they seem to have them in stock at the B&M.

Online you could try Amazon

You might want to seriously concider the 9800 pro if you need high resoulation at high Hz ratings.

The biggest single difference between the 9700 pro and 9800 pro is the 2D resolution refresh rates. You can get serious Hz levels, even 85HZ at 2048x1536, and more than mine confortably, at 75Hz in 1920x1440 res (on a Radeon 9700 Pro).

Thats a good point but in my case I like to stay at 1024x768 because that seems to be the best size for the monitor because I'm on a 17 inch monitor.

I think I'm going to order the rest of my system soon and just use my aging Radeon VE SDRAM card for some time until the 9800 card prices fall down to somewhere near $300.

All right, I'll check on that once it arrives. Thanks for the tip!
