Where are the 120Hz monitors?!!!

I've been putting off upgrading my monitor for these to show up but so far there have only been 22's out. They are rediculously overpriced and I haven't heard any news about future 120Hz monitors. What is going on? My CRT TV needs replacement due to geometry issues and my 20" monitor is a bit small. I'd also like to play 1080p video. This monitor looks nice for the price but I'm concerned the dot pitch will be too large and text won't look good.

After selling 2x of those 28" 1st generation and returning a 2nd gen from bestbuy, and that westinghouse 25.5", I would say dot pitch is not the question u should be asking unless you really plan on using it for nothing but text work

I think pricing and sales may be a factor since they are expensive at the moment,for the same price or even slightly lower you can get a better panel type ie VA or e-IPS etc...and for a lot of gamers a fast response TN 60Hz with low input lag is fine for gaming at the moment (like in my case).

I too am really holding out for a decent monitor, at the moment all we have is trade-offs. After Xbitlabs review recently of the Samsung 120hz monitor I am looking forward to more coming to market if they ever come.

Input lag

The suitability of a monitor for gaming is not only dependent on its response time and streaking formation, but is also largely reliant on the input lag. The SyncMaster does not always function in a lag-free manner: the monitor fluctuates between no lag and a lag of one frame (16 ms) in general. There are also peaks of two frames (32 ms), but these arise very seldom.

From our measurements, we obtained an average input lag of 10 ms. Although this is not ideal, it is still an outstanding result.

I have seen some 60Hz TN LCDs with better input response so yes its trade-off on what you want in LCD for gaming depending on model/type etc..

The next monitor I buy will almost certainly be a 120hz monitor. I think I'd prefer 19*12 over 16*10 however (at 22 inch) and they don't exist yet.

I'm staring into a Samsung 2233RZ as I'm typing this. I've never, in all the games or apps I have used, even had an inkling of input lag. If there is any sort of lag, it's not enough to be noticeable. Really nice monitor. Even nicer when I use 3DVision.

I picked up the KDL32XBR9 this weekend at BestBuy. It's still on sale. Awesome display for PC use. Low input lag when Game Mode is enabled, and a perfect display for watching movies and such, too.

I have trouble understanding the idea how 120hz gaming without Stereo3d is so appealing to some. I've tried it and the monitors are nice but in no way shape or form from my perspective to they even come close to offering the immersion of Stereo3d -- even with its limitations.

if it's the older 28" models, ur looking at backlight bleeding as a huge possibility, and really uneven brightness vertically, the new ones are slightly improved, but they still have inaccurate color and contrast is just bad, blacks look like crap

Some LCD TV have huge input lag and they are not suited for competative gaming just so u know.

I have this monitor at home for my everyday work, having seperate work and personal PCs. This onitor is not great for gaming - it is a TN panel, and the top of the screen is dimmer than the rest. This is not so noticable for office work, but is very bad for gaming - at least it annoys me, enough to call it almost unusable for darker games. My Soyo 24" S-PVA panel is much better for games. Unless you are playing a super bright game, the 28" Hanns-G isn't very good.

Pros: Size, brightness, and price.

Cons: Low contrast is very evident while viewing dark scenes. A large amount of backlight bleeding, especially at the bottom. Poor viewing angles. Mine makes a quiet buzzing noise while viewing certain images.

Other Thoughts: The biggest flaw is the contrast. I hooked up my other monitor as a clone display and tried to get the Hanns to display the same amount of detail in dark scenes, unfortunately it couldn't.


I agree 100% with this review. It is a great work monitor, and even served me well as a display at a tradeshow. However it is crappy for many games.

I have an older one, and backlight bleeding isn't too, but the uneven brightness vertically is a real downside for gaming. This unevenness on mine is due to the TN panel, rather than any defect in the monitor. For gaming, inaccurate color is not much of an issue, just adjust the colors to you like them - I like colors a bit brighter and vivid, rather than accurate. Blacks are a bit crap, though.

I've placed my Hanns-G side by side with my Soyo, and the difference is night and day - the Soyo is way better. The Hanns-G is great for work, and the price is insanely cheap. My company paid $200 more back in December 2007.

The ASUS monitors look nice and are some of the fastest for gaming but I'm afraid 120Hz will come out soon after I buy mine. Also, newegg has a terrible return policy on lcd's so I'm not sure what to do.

i own that monitor linked in the OP, dot pitch on it is just fine. i dont have any buyers remorse, and for a gaming monitor it's simply stunning. if your primary concern is gaming and movie watching, you really arent going to see anything bigger without going up a resolution. as for 120hz monitors, they arent mature enough yet to make them worth their price. i would say wait it out a year for them to come down in price before i would consider buying one

ed: i should also mention that the same monitor was supposedly about $700 when it launched (something i read on hardocp forums from an old post), so it's a damn good bargain considering it's only $396 shipped in california

No, 120Hz makes your mouse movement smoother. It greatly reduces errors caused by RTC. It reduces motion blur and and let's you not use v-sync since it can display 120fps. Also gameplay is much more fluid. It's full of benefits.

Of course, this would surface right after I bought a 22" 1680x1050 one (Viewsonic VX2265WM)

Seems to be no word of a release date though?

Edit: I do :heart: my Viewsonic though, 120Hz is all kinds of epic for gaming (particularly FPS). It's what finally replaced my GDM-FW900.
