Where are PDAs with wireless internet capabilities?

StageLeft

No Lifer
AFAIK most/all PDAS now are wireless capable but only if they are within close proximity to a desktop running the appropriate software/hardware, right?

Is it possible to buy a PDA and run IE, msn messenger, etc. with full wireless capabilities elsewhere, like in the mall or driving down the highway, etc. or are we not there yet? I think there was a nice wireless network in some areas of the country that was shut down a year back (?). I know you can get the blackberry and other small devices but accessing webpages that are stripped down for wireless devices suck butt. I want a pDA that has full color with real webpages (I'm not asking for flash, but a real webpage nonetheless), and MSN and whatnot that is fully wireless capable.

A PocketPC + 802.11b CF card will take care of surfing at home.

PocketPC + SprintPCS cellphone & data cable (or, a PocketPC with a PC card slot + Sprint Wireless card) will take care of surfing everywhere else, albeit at ~9.6 Kbps.

None of the webpages will be "stripped down," but I don't know if the latest versions of PIE support Java, Flash, etc.

Nice, but they still are talking about websites optomized for wireless devices 🙁

Nice! That is slow as heck but not stripped down is nice.

i have a Palm VIIx which is COMPLETELY wireless 😛

I dont need a seperate card, a wireless station, a cell phone, etc. 😀

IMO, the best current PDAs that can do this are the Palm i705 and the Handspring Treo. However neither one of these is a color device. Handspring is expected to release a color version of its Treo, I forget when though. The next round of PocketPC devices look pretty promising though, most of them will have Bluetooth and/or 802.11b integrated, but that still isnt exactly what you're looking for. I think that I will be sorely tempted to buy the color Handspring Treo whenever it is available.

That's great, but it's not color, and the websites are stripped down. Plus the service is a bit expensive.

I dont really care about color, and Skoorb mentioned it as an afterthought.

You can view full webpages, btw. link

I dont have unlimited service for mine, so i have never tried it. I'm limited by bandwidth.

Doesn't sound like an afterthought to me.

That's cool that now you can view entire webpages, but I can see why you don't use it if you use the 100K plan. One big pic on a webpage, and you're over your allocation! 🙂

i have the mid level plan, but i forgot my limit 🙂

I had a VIIx for about 7 months, it was pretty cool & had a high gee whiz factor, but it was agonizingly slow, data input is tedious (forget about getting your passwords in quickly), current Palm OS's don't multi-task, so it's one application @ a time, service fees are high, and the devices aren't particularly sturdy (RMA'd mine 2X in those 7 months).

Kyocera Palm phone is too big (even the current generation), had one of those too.

What I want is a Palm 505-515-V size, or slightly larger that does the web wirelessly without the web clippings, faster data transfer, better input (Blackberry-querty style keyboard) and I want it to rotate horizontally, with a color screen, & with a cell phone...

The Handspring Treo's are out (Amazon has them listed), to mixed reviews, too large a form factor, no multitasking, no color. I'm on my umpteenth PDA, and like the Palm form factor the best, going to pick up a Palm 515 in the next week or so.

I'm currently using an Ipaq with a cell phone to check e-mail, irc, aim, and browse the web with pocket internet explorer. It's not bad with a compression server. Makes it decent.
