TechPowerUp was able to disable 1 core on the 4870x2. Love to see another review though, if your up to it.Originally posted by: apoppin
i got tired of waiting
my $469 4870x2 arrived today ..
does anyone know off hand if a core can be disabled? So i can test it like a single 4870/1GB?
i probably have to buy one anyway and sell my 512MB version
for Xfire-x3
i'm off to test and review

In order to get scores for single-GPU HD 4870 X2, I disabled one device in Windows Device Manager

yes, i was surprised by it coming thru rather quickly. That is the 2nd VT i got from BB; the other was 2900xt with OB for $330 just after it launchedNot bad on the BB pre-order! That darn thing was posted hours after I pulled the trigger on my X2. I'd much rather have that Visiontek. Oh well. Enjoy the card.
Despite what GPU-Z will report, the fan runs at 27%. A 40% fan speed will make a world of difference. I have a lot of air blowing on the card which helps. At any rate, those stock idle/load temps can be improved...

disabling one core is not a clear indication, it still lost to the 4870 512MB on occasion because it is limited to half the PCIe bandwidth due to the on board splitter. while other times the extra ram compensated enough for it to win.

- i'd say disabling a X2's core will give you a good indication of a 1GB 4870's performance at 800/1000 [my max stable OC with CCC]

My bad. I thought most X2s had an 800 default core clock.
Nvidia should be releasing GT200b should be release soon. At the very least the should be some better deals coming soon for GTX260 and 4870 512MB. The only high demanding title that's coming soon are warhead and far cry 2, so you got till the sep 16th.Originally posted by: hybrid2d4x4
Thanks for the links, dennilfloss. I didn't notice that directcanada put up some 1gb cards, it seems that they're getting closer to release! If only they didn't carry a $100 premium over the cheapest 512 version...
With a GTX260 for only $240 after rebate, I'm almost tempted pick one up rather than keep playing the waiting game, even if my mobo favors ATI with the prospect of CF down the road.
