So the follow up to the Jefferson dancing arrests took place this weekend.

A few hundred people showed up, danced for a bit, and then the police shut the memorial down.
No one was arrested, everyone had a good time, and life goes on.

Check out the link for some nice pictures of Jefferson and Lincoln dancing.

Depending on your viewpoint, Saturday's demonstration in response to the arrest of four people inside the Jefferson Memorial was either a huge success or a massive failure. Or maybe both. It's impossible to quantify, honestly.
About 200 of the more than the several thousand who had RSVPed showed up at the Memorial to get down on Saturday afternoon. But despite the lower-than-hoped turnout, Park Police played it cool, perhaps having learned that video footage of them restraining people wasn't going to get them anywhere. Sure, there were a bunch of armed-to-the-teeth cops on hand, including ones on horseback. But no one was arrested -- instead, after a little bit of twisting, police simply closed down the memorial and kicked everyone out, though not without taking a few photographs themselves.
Of course, the National Park Service still says that "it is not appropriate to be dancing in an area that memorializes some of the most famous Americans," so it's unclear whether all this accomplished anything. But hey, it wasn't a total loss -- at least those tourists who just so happened to be checking out the Jefferson on Saturday might have come away with the understanding that the District's a little more eccentric than the city's button-down reputation may have led them to believe.

Speaking of memorials, reminds me of Fidel Castro laying a wreath at the Lincoln Memorial soon after coming to power, when Eisenhower refused to meet him.

Turns out Castro admired Lincoln and kept a bust of him in his office.
