I just started to have this problem. Accessing any files and doing anything is fine, but once I run bittorrent (i've tried the original, experimental, and azureus version, all w/ the same outcome), my computer starts to slow down.

It eventually stops responding (although mouse moves). It feels like a memory leak..

I can close all the other processes, but the bittorrent process will NEVER close, no matter how many times I try to force close it. It doesn't allow for my system to shut down either, since it will be the only process left running. This really sucks.

WTF is going on.

This started happenning yesterday.

I did a system restore point, but that didn't solve the problem.

EDIT: GAH PHOK sorry, i meant to put this thread in tech support... I have both windows up, one for tech support, and one for OT..

EDIT2:
latest java installed.
I've tried other clients (regular bittorrent, and other variations, all with the same effect).
Started 2 days ago.
my system is my rig (2.4gighz xp2400+, 1gig pc3200, 36gig Raptor hdd, blah..)

update:

I think my harddrive is dying. When I dl any torrent to another haddrive to my roommate's computer in the network, it's fine.

When dl it to my boot drive, it's fine.

So it's my 160gig hdd that's messed up at the moment.

The problem is with the Bittorent client. There is a setting you need to turn down for how many client connections there are to be allowed. Ill post here with more info once I get back home to my own PC.

Azureus is teh suck. If I recall correctly, it was a memory hog but maybe they've addressed this problem in the newer versions.

I know that it used to be a hog, but prior to today, I was using the experimental bittorrent client (the one where you can set limits, but other than that, no different from the original original bittorrent client).

It was that once I had this problem, I tried azureus, and other variants. All of them give me the same result.

I'm beginnign to think that it's my hdd that's at fault now, since anything related to bitorrent will basically kill the system, and my system isn't old.

still a memory hog... 70MB for JAVAW.EXE seeding a single file right now.

Unfortunately, it's still the best BT has to offer. BitComet has a screwy file management/resume system.

Azureus 2202 works fine on my system, overnight, whole week. J2SE 5.0. FF 102. Maybe you got virus. Format C: STAT. Did you mess w/ the ports?

Are you using SP2? And your also probably using the stock port 6881, right?

Thats why. Use a port from 42000-65355 or whatever the last port is, forward it on your router if you need to and your done.

Your PC has moral issues with BT ... although it can be used for good, how many have actually used it in that manner? Honestly now. ;)

Doesn't that spawn a new instance for each file you download/seed ? Not much for file management there IIRC.
