When you're driving, are you aware of what's actually behind you?

I witness this everytime on my commute to NYC everyday. People will hop in the left lane, and there will be a dozen or more cars behind them, yet they seem oblivious to the other drivers who want to pass them? Why is this?

I am always aware of what is all around me when driving.....constantly scanning is the mark of a good/safe driver. I don't know what they teach you kids these days but most of you can't drive for sh!t.

They are so old and stiff they cant turn around to look, and don't like mirrors because they are a generation ahead of mirrors

My car has a special package or something with three mirrors that let you see what's behind your car. It's really cool and really useful, especially when you're driving!

And to the left back of your car and the right back of your car. :)

Female drivers? Not being sexist, just a realist.

i always look in my rearview to scan for cars around me... have one of those wide convex mirrors that allows me to see everything in 1 shot.. it's great. I feel safer with it since I know which side is open if I need to make an emergency maneuver.

What I don't get is how some people have the rearview mirror angled so high that the driver has to tilt their head up to look in it... you're supposed to move your eyeballs to see it, not your entire head. It's at least supposed to be in your peripheral.

22 here and I do the same. Never know when I might need to make an emergency maneuver.

Also, any track experience will make scanning around you an automatic task.

I do the same, and I'm 22. It's not just the kids (though they tend to be more reckless, I'll admit), practically everyone sucks at driving it seems.

I check all around me constantly when I drive. I can't stand riding with a friend that's driving because they're all sucky drivers (braking too late, no signals, etc.).

yeah it's part of generally keeping a lookout for idiots. It's nice to have some idea of what my escape options are at all times, in case the moron in front of me does something moronic.

I also try to stay out of other people's blind spots.

I pay almost as much attention to what's behind me as what's in front of me. Why? Cops.
