When you write down a phone number, do you space out the numbers with a - or a dot?

If you write down someones phone number do you space out the numbers with a dash or a dot?

Example:
123-456-7890

or

123.456.7890

You can also be the bastard that does 1234567890.

I was taught to use the dash growing up in NJ in the 80s. I think using the dot is more popular in Europe, but I am seeing it a lot over here now. Maybe the younger generations are using the dot. Kinda like # is no longer a pound sign but is a hashtag now.

Your thoughts?

If I'm typing I use a dot. If handwriting, I leave a gap between the groupings.

(123) 456-7890

<--Bastard that still thinks we have 7 digit phone numbers when in reality we have moved to a 10 digit number. The area code is no longer a prefix or appendage but rather an integral part of the number. I will learn someday.

Hyphens. Who the hell uses periods? I'm not writing an IP address.

I also use parentheses around the area code. Something about a properly wrote phone numbers is just pleasing to the eye.

I see it a lot now. I did it for a little while too, and then I thought it looked kind of douchey, so I went back to the hyphens.

I never liked the parentheses fwiw. I guess they made a bit more sense when you only had to dial the exchange and the number unless you were dialing another area code, they switched over to mandatory 10 digit dialing when I was like 10. I write my phone numbers xxx-xxx-xxxx.

I grew up using the hyphen, but use the dot now. To me it appears more elegant.
