ROFL -- a little chuckle
ROFLPIMP -- sustained audible laughter

I think we have a tendancy to exagerate to try and make the topic more interesting. Not just in 'LOLs' but in a lot of communication.

I just say "hehe" or something similar usually, but occasionally use "ROTFLMFAOPIMP" if i think something is pretty funny. :)
