When you turned 18 did you start getting credit card applications?

For people living in USA, when you turned 18 did you start getting credit card applications?

Everybody I know did, but for some reason I didn't. And to this day it seems I have to jump through more hoops than most when attempting to apply for a credit card (still haven't been able to get one)

I'm trying to figure out why from the day I've been 18 up to now i've never recieved a single credit card application.

Could it be because my mom was on social security and claimed me as a dependent after 18? I remember her having me sign some stuff so she could keep getting money from the government, but at the time I didnt understand the ramifications of this. Could that have affected my own credit rating, and thus be the reason why I have never recieved a single credit card application in the mail? Everytime I try to ask my mom about it, the issue is dodged.

No. Then again, that was back in the 1970's, so that might have had something to do with it. :biggrin:

I don't think I had a credit card until I was 23 or 24 if I recall correctly.

Have you checked your credit report for any negative entries? If you never had any credit before it shouldn't have much on it, but maybe you had your identity stolen and don't know about it. I doubt that, but it's one avenue to pursue for an answer.

Also, I don't remember ever receiving credit card applications until about the last 6-8 months. I know that's probably because I spent my late teens and early twenties doing my damnedest to wreck my credit though.

I suppose being tied to somebody getting government aid could be a valid reason.

I did when I applied to college. I was only 16 at the time so someone must have been selling students' information.

I dont think she stole my identity but I think by her claiming me as a "dependant" after I turned 18 it put an asterisk next to my name and it makes it even harder for me now to get a credit card

im at the point in my life where i need a credit card, i need to upgrade my car etc... i cant keep driivng around these cheap cars... in Seattle it makes you look like a lowlife if you dont have a new car, zero chance of getting a girlfriend etc... ive had the same job for almost 5 years now full time, got no bills except my cell phone which i always pay and i still cant get a damn credit card..

I started getting them once I became a college student. Of course, things have likely long since changed, as college was a long time ago.

I turned 18 in 2001, I am 30 now.

My brother is 2 years older than me. My mom did not claim him as a dependent for whatever reason. As soon as he turned 18 he started getting tons of credit card applications in the mail.

Mom claims me as a dependent, money issues or whatever at the time I guess, and I have literally never recieved a credit card application, and I'm 30 now. Been full time employed tax payer all those years too, and my only bill is a cell phone bill which I pay with my debit card.

you need to find out asap what's going on for real

That's unpossible unless something is very, very wrong

no amount of 'claiming as dependent' will cause something that drastic

Never got any myself that I can remember. Parents had excellent credit, no government aid or anything. Just turned 30 too.

I had a lot of trouble getting my first CC, simply because I had 0 credit history into my mid twenties. Even store cards like BB, Macy's etc. got denied approval. Student online CC applications denied.

Finally just went into my bank with a W-2 and two prior paychecks. Got approved for a $500 line.

Little while after that, started getting like 5 CC offers a week, and still am.

Why wait? Just apply for a secured card to get your credit history started.
