When you sell stuff...

How exactly do YOU determine what to set the price at? Do you take the current retail price and take off a certain percentage or something? Do you look at places like ebay to see around how much they are going for?

I check out how much if new.... Has it proved to be a good performer... then set a price I would be willing to pay for it. (I usually go in the range of 1/2 depending on the item and it's condition.)

I find that Anandtech members tend to be a bit unrealistic in the prices they want to pay for items (mostly broke High School or college students).

Set the amount YOU need to receive and put it up.

Ignore the cries of those who would rape you. If you set a fair price someone will buy it.

The keyword is, how soon do you want to get rid of it? Are there a lot of the same items for sell? Is the item "hot" like everyone like to have? This will decide the selling price of the item.

if i go on auction,
I normally try to look at similar items to get a fair idea of how much things are worth
but selling to friends

well, that one is just a mutual agreement

erm, selling to outsiders,
I will set a price I deem reasonable and then let the bargain goes

If it's in good condition I go about 20% below the cheapest price I can find the item @ but prefer to barter...

BTW nice 3DFX collectection edmundoab 😉

Most stuff that I sell I do by Ebay.
I tend to base the reserve price on what I can get just by putting using a free ad and everything on top of this is a bonus. Never failed yet.

For something really old or of questionable desirabilty - ie I can't stand it I don't bother with a reserve at all.
