When you RMA a Hard Drive, do they check the contents of the disk?

I've got a Western Digital 60gb drive thats been giving me some static. By static I mean BIOS sees it but Windows doesn't and it won't spin up. I'd like to get it RMA'd but I do not want anyone else to have access to the contents of the drive. So, if I send it off do they check the contents or just test the mechanics of the drive, repair it, and ship it back? Is there any safe way to "remove" or "premanently damage" the data on the disk without voiding the warranty?

Thanks.

PS. No, it's not porn.

I'm sure they get way to many dead drives in a day to worry about taking your apart and fixing it so they can view your porn stash ;)

well from what i've heard it's possible to even recover data from a disk that's been smashed, burned and thrown in the water if the people have the right equipment and know what they are doing. so i assume wd could, but why would they? ironically, most can't even recover their data after a simple power outage that causes the tables to get corrupted. man i hate harddrives.

what is on the drive anyway? did you run a pirate ftp or something?

I doubt if they do much beyond basic tests to be sure you're not dicking them around. They probably see thousands of HDs every day.

You don't get your drive back. If it's broken, they send you another one. They don't fix yours and return it to you.

I ran a pirate FTP off a WD120GB....had it go bad on me and the thing was 90% full of stuff at the time...but i stil;l sent it off for RMA...came back no problem and never heard anything about it...
in other words you dont got much to worry about. They take the drive and put it in a machine to test power up and boot up and if either one of those dont work they prettymuch just pack you up a "new" one...i've never actually gotten the drive i sent to wd/maxtor/seagate back...just always a similar model/size

prolly gay pron,
is that why you are worried ?

if it's straight porn then you got nothing to worry about. Every guy has it.
they'll understand.

As a matter of practice, I'm sure they don't look at the contents. What a waste of time.

However, you need to appreciate that if they wanted to, they almost certainly COULD, and there's not much you can do about it.

If you really want to keep the contents secret, your only option is to destroy the drive.

I wouldn't doubt the people at WD don't get bored every now and again and rifle through people's hard drives.

they have a p0rn meter that scans for pics. If they find any, then send copies to your mother and/or spouse.

And I have received rma replacements from maxtor that had someone elses data. One time I was even able to boot windows 98.

Run a strong magnet over the drive.
