When you go to the supermarket.....

I was just wondering what people's opinions on the above subjects are.

Where I got such a thought from: I work in a supermarket where the management is very anal about cashiers/baggers talking with each other while ringing up groceries (I don't see what the big dilema is if they aren't messing anything up or talking about stuff that shouldn't really be discussed in a work environment). As for the bagging question: personally, I loathe paper bags with their sharp, papery edges, and even more so when people want them to be 'light' (meaning one item per bag :|)

Another thing I really hate is how some customers seem to think that any kind of pricing mistakes are my fault.

Don't care for both. As long as the talking does not distract the workers from their jobs, and as long as the bags don't rip, it doesn't really matter. Paper bags seem to be more robust however, so I'll vote for that.

Talking doesn't bother me as long as they don't make any mistakes... I always watch carefully too because I've caught a few big price errors in progress. I prefer plastic bags because I can carry like 12 of them inside in one trip.

i would prefer cashiers not to socialize when i am at the check out. that is what the break room is for. if it is work related, fine. but if it is personal stuff, it doesnt belong in front of the customers.

I don't care, so long as they're efficient about ringing up and bagging my stuff. I get plastic bags because I tend to reuse them for other things.

From my experience, customers tend to appreciate it if you interact with them rather than with your coworkers. It makes their shopping 'experience' more 'personal', I guess -- it can persuade them to choose your store over a competitor's.

I use self check out whenever possible. When in a normal checkout, I don't care if they socialize...as long as it's not slowing them down.

And plastic bags all the way. I reuse them, and I like to arrange my groceries so that I can carry like 10 bags with one hand, and use keys with the other

Can't believe how many people I saw in DC who pushed a cart full of plastic encased food and bubble packaged misc stuff to the checkout and then boldly said "Paper please!". Sort of like the five bages they put the other plastic wrappings in are going to save the universe.

Plastic is much easier to use to cover your waste baskets in the house
Also, the cashier talking with coworkers is no big deal and is acutally fun to listen
to a conversation and knowing that such a boring job as a cashier can be more interesting.

I don't really care if they socialize, and I like to have a mix of paper and plastic in the house, so generally I ask them to bag it in whatever way is easiest for them and I get some of both. If we're running low on paper bags, I'll ask for paper or for both. (I use the paper bags to clean out my rats' cage. We save some of the plastic, but once we've got a lot, I throw them out.)

I reuse the bags, and they save trips to the car. I can carry like 12 bags at once, which with paper would have been like 6 trips, screw that.
